How did we get so far away from the original subject? And how did it evolve into a nasty fight about supplements and personal choices and beliefs? This is America where we are free to have our own beliefs and make our own choices. Why does a simple exchange of ideas turn into a sermon or lecture?
But back to cortisone injections .... I had one recently for chronic head, neck and shoulder pain caused by previous injury and arthritis. Was there a guarantee that pain would go away? No. Only a suggestion that it might be a temporary help. It was one of three options offered. The first two were surgery and introduction of prescription pain meds and I am willing to live with current pain (and worse) before I do either of those.
Since the injection, I've been mostly free of pain in these areas. Do I fall on my knees singing "Praise God, I'm cured" or get out my pulpit and preach it. Of course not. Nor would I have cursed the doctor if the pain had remained or even gotten worse. He gave me his best advice and I chose to take it but only after weeks of research on the pros and cons.
If the relief only lasts for a few days or weeks, then I'm grateful for that.

Helen, of course, you are free to do what you choose, we all are. I do my best to avoid steroid injections and of course no oral steroids. I believe NOW that the team of docs who were attending me for a knee mess, which turned out to be a staph infection, and it took the docs 2.5 months to find it. Via an MRI. They gave me a steroid injection FIRST and I am now believing it's caused my knee to degenerate even more. A friend was really thinking about a steroid injection for her hip and she's NEVER had any steroids and she's 75, and now she's for sure NOT getting it. She just sent me this link from Dr. Brownstein and comments attached to the link. www.drbrownstein.com/23203-2/?inf_contact_key=b585cd388f169bb1e0d92af3cc3133d3d18a532c4142cb79caf2b269de1401faTalk about advancing arthritis and break down of bones. Hope you read the link. So many just don't know the damage steroids do.

Regarding the original post. Most doctors I have been to are ortho doctors and they caution against steroid injections and tell you up front what the consequences are... they also refer the patient to physical therapy AND a nutritionist. I live in a very small town but from reading some of this it seems our doctors are very unique. We have holistic doctors and chiropractors as well as many massage therapist and alternative ways to treat pain.

We are discussing this issue on the other health group I'm a member of and many do go with the steroids, get some temporary relief, but for all the damage they do, not enough real healing. Everyone grasps for help. Some are taking more fish oils.
