Malaria is a nasty disease!! Does it reoccur with you? For several years after, I think it did. There hasn't been any [suspected] recurrences since the mid/late 70s. Lucky it stopped. I've heard it happens to many. Ugandans of course don't take antimalarial pills, so most get it at some time. They build up an immunity where it finally becomes like a mild case of flu as an adult. Many babies die from it because they aren't careful about using mosquito nets on beds. We took a weekly pill - brand name Lariam (mefloquine) and never caught it. Many volunteers took a daily pill that was also a mild antibiotic. No thanks! Glad we didn't have to take that one. The one we took was called the nightmare pill as many people had vivid nightmares when they took it.

There are 4 types of Malaria, I'm thinking mine was the lesser severe version, as I don't recall having gastrointestinal problems or particularly feeling bad, aside from fever, sweating etc.

He swears he'd been taking the pills like he was supposed to (starting from 3 weeks before arrival). He had it really bad - hallucinations and everything else. Took him a very long time to recover and then he was sent home. Malaria is not an issue in this part of Thailand - only around northern borders. But they do occasionally get dengue fever which can be quite bad. There is no prevention. The manager where we stay had it and she was in the hospital for 5 days. Very high fever and intestinal problems and headaches. The mosquito which carries it looks different and it's possible to get bitten in the daytime. We use mosquito repellant.

IIRC, my departure from Vietnam was delayed by almost 2 weeks, then a layover in Guam then the Philippines for a week before reaching Ft. Ord. I spent 3 weeks there, then was transported to the VA hospital in Los Angeles. I didn't stay there long, perhaps one day.

If you want to gain I can give you LOTS of tips! Unfortunately, I'm good at that. I do eat very healthy - lots of fresh fruit and veggies. Thai food is usually loaded with veggies - 6 different veggies in many dishes. However, I like a cold beer or 2 or 3 especially sitting in the shade next to a beach. Sweet tooth. Also love salty snacks. I also get a lot of exercise. Years ago I had to drink Ensure twice a day to add calories to my diet per doctor orders. My cousin once told me that we were all born as 'little' people. I would love to eat Thai food..I think. Love love veggies. I struggle now with keeping a static weight. I do love a cold beer in the summer. LOL, not so much when it is really cold outside. :)

Some dishes are spicy but you can have most dishes as mild or spicy as you want it. Cold beer + hot weather goes together very well. My sister was born with a very thin physique and she's always been average size or thin. She's become too thin as she ages - she'll be 70 this month.

I'm starting 2020 fat again... I sure would feel better if I could lose 10 or 20 pounds.. but I don't seem to have the motivation any more. Hubby and I love to eat and we love our cocktails... and we are happy.. So I'll try to cut back, but I can't make any promises.

You would enjoy Thai food. Many think it's all spicy but it isn't. Asian food is few and far between here in our rural area, much to my chagrin. Lol, my wife found a couple missing Christmas presents she got for me:
...so I get "spicy" and disposable chopsticks to brush up on my waning chopstick skills.

My main thing is for my trousers and shorts not to be too tight to wear. And I refuse to get rid of them and buy new ones.

Husband cooks Thai food at home and can't get every ingredient but can get many of them. And some dried in packets we bring home with us. What we can find locally we order from Amazon. I'm curious. Since you would have been in Vietnam during a war would you ever consider visiting as a tourist? I'm visiting later this month for a few days - Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon).

It's been a while since I posted my weight-loss progress. I just got off the scale, unclothed, and I now weigh exactly 56.4 pounds less than just over 28 months ago (August 28, 2017). The loss averages two pounds a month, slow but steady. It is such a relief to not have all that excess poundage weighing me down!

I'm not a world traveler but visiting Vietnam would be an attractive idea. I didn't leave my heart there, like some guys did....I was just lucky.
My 'unofficial' bucket list would have a trip abroad of some kind, to one or more of several Asian destinations: Wudang Mountains to see the Taoist temples and monasteries;
Taipei, because my son's partner is from there;
Tokyo because it is Tokyo;
Bangkok, as I never got to go on R & R there when I was in Vietnam, having been "robbed" by a fellow soldier.

I'd be very happy if I was 15 or 16 lbs less.

I haven't been to Vietnam before but I hear a lot of praise from a travel group I'm in on FB. I love Buddhist temples in Thailand and would love to see the ones in Myanmar and Cambodia. Haven't seen any Taoist ones. I'd like to visit Tokyo but hubby has no interest. We only go to the airport in Bangkok - we did spend one afternoon there on our second trip here but it was so crowded and hot we just went back to our airport hotel. Did manage to see the Emerald Buddha but that's it.

I FINALLY met my weight goal, plus a but more than I hoped for. My goal was 2 lb/month and miraculously ended being exactly that. I feel 20 years younger.
