Today is my one year anniversary of using MyFitnessPal app. For me counting calories and journaling works!
Well done! I don't use an app but have been using a spreadsheet I designed about 8 or 9 years ago to log food & calories. I don't have to do the math either as the spreadsheet does it. I don't log workouts but do stick to a cardio and muscle routine (when we don't have visitors). Trusting my own judgement wouldn't work for me. But I do eat healthy.

In my opinion, you could just forget about calories and all that, and let your body's natural wisdom do its job. As long as you avoid processed junk food and are physically active. But some people enjoy using the apps and counting calories. I would hate it. My body has no natural wisdom, so I have to be the control freak. I don't 'enjoy' counting calories, but I do know that in order for me to lose weight, I have to do some accounting.

There is very little that we have to consciously control. There are natural systems that control appetite, so we naturally know when to eat or not. These systems can get disrupted and don't always work. Processed food can fool the appetite, for example.

Everyone's body has natural wisdom. If it didn't, your heart would not be beating. Not really "natural wisdom" more like:
Conditioning(habits) have an impact on weight loss or gain(Pavlov's dogs). Also what you eat makes a difference, protein acts to fulfill your body's needs. Carbs stimulate your hunger. These two chemical processes happen in Real Life. I'm not sure what "natural wisdom" even is, a metaphysical / philosophical construct?

Natural wisdom is what we are born with, what we don't have to think about. Just because you put labels on it, like "sympathetic nervous system" doesn't mean it isn't natural. Nature is intelligent, the universe is infinite intelligence. That is believed in all ancient traditions, and in modern alternative medicine (such as chiropractic and acupuncture). Because of your interest in yoga and tai chi, I would expect you to be aware of this. Modern mainstream medicine denies the intelligence of nature. They will make you think you have to count calories, etc.

They will make you think you have to count calories, etc. In fact I am aware of how nature has an 'intelligent order that has not[as of yet] been defined or labeled by Western scientific medicine.
It may be your view that modern medicine denies the existence of such, but I don't agree.
Things like Qi and 'natural wisdom' are beyond the scope of modern science's ability to quantify or measure, but I have never ever seen a scientific paper asserting that they do not exist.
Please provide your own definition of natural wisdom and how it relates to the body's ability to make 'good choices'. My body needs the nutritional wisdom I've gained and my brain's determination that my body have proper nuitrition.
Marketing practices exploit the body's natural wisdom and redirects the body & mind to seek the products that maximize corporate profits. Packaged or prepared foods most highly promoted contain unhealthy amounts of sugar, fat and sodium, the body wants it, the mind goes along with it, and there is NO 'natural wisdom' poping up in the back of the mind trying to stop it. Education in nutrition is what can shape how a person makes good choices in nutrition,

The body gets confused by things we did not evolve with. And mainstream medicine does deny Qi. Medical students are taught that Qi, life energy, does not exist and is just ancient superstition.

Just because a medical school doe not endorse or confirm the existence of Qi, that alone does not mean that they deny, or actively teach against such existence.

I don't know what you are basing your opinion on. I know what they teach in biology classes, and they teach Darwinian evolution and materialism. If it isn't 100% of schools, it is near that. (No, I am NOT an evolution denier. I just don't believe it happened by chance).

Weight, I gotta lose it! I have the start of a game plan, some preliminary numbers from an online calculator: ...now I can kick around some daily menus, and get a food log put together. I did not meet my originally stated goal, at least not in the time frame contemplated. I actually didn't get much momentum going on my weight loss until spring of this year. I am now 174.4 lb.s, well past my last goal of getting my BMI in the "normal" range.
Now I gotta STOP losing weight, and start regaining muscle....much harder to do. Ha, my weight loss program turned into an obsession, and is a borderline eating disorder...am apprehensive about abandoning my strict regimen and shifting my eating towards eating more fat and carbs(good carbs).
Both my yoga teachers are trying to "fatten" me up[with muscle], a bit amusing because they both are shaped like vegans.

tnthomas, what you've achieved with your weight loss is impressive...congratulations!
Perhaps weight lifting and resistance training would help to build back some muscle. That would likely add a few pounds of muscle, but it burns more calories than other body tissue, and provides the strength to do the things you want to do.
I've lost 43-44 pounds in the past 25 months, and notice I've also lost muscle mass & gained loose/wrinkly skin in certain areas, particularly under my upper arms. This seems to go with the territory, particularly as one ages.
Best of luck as you move from 'losing' to 'maintaining', with perhaps a little more flexibility in your eating regimen.

Thanks formerlyme , and congratulations on your success as well!
Even-though every one of my Yoga + SilverSneakers + PowerPump and TurboKick classes includes hand weights I my own weight session over the weekend. But, it's just not enough it seems.
I'm planning to hire one of the instructors for some individual weight training. I have some osteo arthritis issues, am hoping the instructor can guide me so as to avoid injuries which can big setbacks in progress.
