You know what? We remodeled two years ago. We waited and saved up for it. This little cottage of 400 ft downstairs and nearly no kitchen got remade. The windows, siding, roof, all was falling apart. We added a small basement and gave ourselves a tiny downstairs bedroom...along with space to cook in the kitchen. Call it foresight. Hubby had his stroke a year after we remodeled. Thank the gods that we had remodeled and prepared ourselves with doors wide enough for wheelchairs. The remodel was to allow us to live easier and also eliminate maintenance for us. We hired a contractor to do it all. It was very well worth it. Remodeling and fixing are very personal choices.

well... that's your choice.. My circumstances are quite different... I don't think you have a right to decide what constitutes pissing away and what doesn't.. It's not your call so shut up... ok? You are right Betty. You have earned your status as one of the bourgeois elite. You can now gaze out your rose colored $20,000 windows at the unwashed masses below and feel good about yourself. Poor, poor misguided man..... Please produce a post of mine that states I ACTUALLY purchased the $20,000 windows.. or rather just got a quote for them.. along with a quote from another company. Not that it's actually any of your business how much I pay for my windows.. however, for sake of setting the record straight.. I did receive a quote from an actual local contractor selling comparable windows.. (see.. I did my homework and research) The quote was for $7,300... and I accepted it.. Should be installed as soon as the Chicago winter eases up and it gets above freezing.. Are you more happier now @tobytyler? lol! You are a real piece of work, I must say... but infinitely amusing.

I won't be financing a single penny of the project. IMO retirement should be debt free. I really don't have a huge house either.. Just under 1,000 square feet.. but I do have a full basement. My house was built in 1961.. I bought it in 1981 and it's completely paid for too.. I suppose I could have opted to buy a huge house that I would still be paying on, but I elected to stay here.. I love my little house.. I love the area.. All my friends and family are here and I'm close to any amenity I could wish for... some even in walking distance. This is why I feel no guilt in spending the money to "Spruce 'er up" a bit as I intend to live here for the rest of my life God willing.. I'll take some before and after pics to post so you can see the progress..

Not sure how extensive your remodel will be but around here most general contractors can draw up plans and give you some good advice as to what is doable...I've lived in this house for 45 years and we have remodeled 3 times...the last time was just 3 years ago. It consisted of new floors, removing old wallpaper, texturing and painting....new cabinets and countertops...took down heavy drapes and replaced with bamboo shades, new cultured marble countertops in bath and laundry rm. On the kitchen cabinets...a cabinet company sent a guy out that help me decide..I'm glad I did this because he designed a better use of the space that I had...go with the nicer runners for drawers...totally worth it...also they put in 2 big drawers for pots and pans that I love...2 lower cabinets have pull out shelves for bowls he added a rope trim at the top that looks good...all of these were things that I would not thought of if he had not told me...I didn't scrimp on new hardware and it looks good..... Things I wish I had done differently......Nicer countertops in kitchen, a nicer sink, On the tile floor, at the time the right color was the most important thing but later I found out it was not thick enough and has cracked in two different places when something was dropped on it....go with a dark grout, I went with a light color that is now dark...dirt dark. I went with dark laminated floors and so far they are holding up well...look good easy to clean..I bought area rugs to go with them....got some good deals with Overstock on the rugs. Don't know if you know about Houzz but their site is full of good info and great pictures. Keep us posted as to how it is going....good luck. I have the same tile in the kitchen and the bath.. except the bathroom tile is 12x12.. the Kitchen is 18x18.. Problem is, as I said.. it was put in 10 years and it does not go under the kitchen cabinets or bathroom vanity.. so it will limit my design choice.. unless I choose to replace the tile.. but I'd like to avoid that.
I have considered Marble or Granite counter and vanity tops, but after researching it, I've learned that Quartz with Resin is durable.. looks just like granite, and is stain and maintenance free.. it's also much less expensive. It comes in any color or pattern you could ever dream of too.. So I'm going with the Quartz....

...I almost forgot, several windows could really use replacement. Don't call Anderson.... Ridiculously pricedWe have Andersen Windows but my dh put them in. They are good windows. Pella are more expensive. nKat Trust me dh does not pay for a name but does look to quality. I told him he squeaked!

The windows I ended up with are Sunrise brand and are of equivalent to Anderson in rating and durability according to Consumer Reports.. If Pella is more expensive than Anderson they must make theirs out of gold.

QuickSiver my dh pulled the kitchen cabinets to put in my wood floors in the kitchen. Told me that is the proper way to put in a floor. Quartz can be expensive depends upon the grade of it you put in. Dd has it in her kitchen and I love it.
NKat
i never heard of that brand of Windows. Pella are fine looking Windows. Dh does not think they are worth their price. Next door neighbor has them with the blinds in the glass.
we did not pay that for Anderson Windows but put them in when dh built the house. we replaced 5 Windows but my house is 42 years old. We had these since the gas in the Windows was slightly discolored and Anderson gave us new Windows to replace those, dh saved them And put them in last year. i have a small house also. Can you imagine replacing the windows in a Hugh house. My windows are double hung and large.

The interior designer just left... and we really clicked!.... she seemed to be able to sense what I wanted and we discussed all the details about the project. Showed me some cabinet colors and countertops.. then she took measurements and did a sketch of my kitchen and bathroom. she is going to do the designs and will be back this Friday to show me what she came up with.. I get to pick out all my stuff too.. Lighting tile, fixtures etc.. Fingers crossed for smooth sailing!

My fingers are crossed for you. Looked up your Windows and they have really good reviews! NKat Oh NKat... I came back here hoping someone replied so I could go on and on about my new kitchen and bath project. I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited I could burst.. I'm getting everything just the way I've always wanted it.. and I get to do all the picking because Mike doesn't really care about shades of white and matching bathtubs and toilets and all the things we ladies care about..
What I like about this designer and remodeling company is that I don't have to step foot in a "Big Box" store.. she brings everything to me here at home.. and I just have to pick... woooo hooo.... Then let the workers do their jobs. She figures the kitchen will take about 5 weeks and the bathroom about 4 weeks.. but they do them one at a time so I'm not without a kitchen AND a bath at the same time... also the put in a temporary sink and rehook up the stove after the cabinets are in so I can cook and wash dishes. This is exciting.

What fantastic news QuickSilver! So glad you are happy with the interior designer and she was on the same page as you with what you wanted. The time frame she gave you seems reasonable to start and finish the job! I'm happy for you girl!!!

QS I do not blame you for being excited, I would be besides myself! In the bathroom, I want it all to match. Dh keeps saying he does not want to replace the tub, but it won't match the new toilet and sink! Grrrr! You have to give us pics!
