It sounds old fashioned to your ears. I did call it oatmeal for a while after moving there, but the box says porridge, people all say porridge, and along with dozens of other words I use the one in the country where I live.
I was 48 when I moved there an my accent was set by then. Although my husband says I don't have that whiny, nasal Michigan accent any more. Others also tell me I sound a bit different but can't pinpoint it . My 'o's are rounder is one observation and I don't talk as fast as I used to. But I can't even do a good imitation of a Scottish accent. Yes, people in the UK will ask me if I'm Canadian or American.
My sister gets very annoyed that I didn't keep using the words I grew up with. She thinks I use different words to be understood. But they become part of my vocabulary after years and the only time I have to think about what word to use is on visits to the US. Garage/gas station, bin/trash can, etc. I always say mobile and never cellphone. Interesting.. I can detect a Wisconsin or Michigan accent.. it's different from Chicago. You think you Michiganders have a nasally long "A"... lol! I admit it.. I have a strong Chicago accent. But.. years ago.. when I was married to my 1st husband who was from Alabama, we would spend a lot of time visiting his family. When I came home, my mother used to have a fit.. said I always came back talking like a "hillbilly"... Although the folks down there found my Chicago accent amusing. They would always try to get me to talk so they could hear it. Some accents are easier to pick up than others.. The Southern accent is very easy to pick up. I left Michigan winters and moved to East Tennessee. So my last 10 years living in the US were in TN. (which is why I have to vote from there). I used to imitate the accent and picked up a twang. Took me several years living in Scotland before I completely got rid of it.

Isn't porridge what they fed the orphans in the work houses back in Dicken's times?

2500 calories yesterday, weighed in at 214 lbs again today.
It doesn't look good for today. Already at 1,010 and it's only 10:30 am.
Walked the 2 mile nature trail at the University of South Alabama this morning. Took us 49 minutes.

And your point is? Are you calling the UK old fashioned? Should I mention how the UK was years ahead of the US when it came to mobile phones, chip and pin, and paying bills online and not writing cheques. I felt like I'd moved ahead by years when I moved to Scotland.
But I've gone off topic. Apologies.

There is no such thing as off topic. It's discusionary evolution.

3000 calories again yesterday and 214 lbs. again this am. Walked 2 miles in the neighborhood in 39 minutes.
About 2-3 times a week my wife eats cereal for breakfast. A couple of weeks ago she ran out of it. It's this stuff she gets from a health food store called 7 grain organic. I won't touch the stuff myself. It looks like tasteless mush to me. I prefer Conecuh Sausage (something I have discovered since moving to Alabama) with a fried egg slapped on top of it.
Anyway a couple of weeks ago the Health Food Store ran out of it. And apparently their supplier ran out too. So anyway I left my name and number with them and asked them to call us when they got it back in. In the meantime I took her to the local "Whole Food" market. That trendy place where people go so that they can say they went there. I usually avoid that place because I find it pretentious and way overpriced.
I was hoping they might have the 7 grain organic, but of course they didn't. But m wife found some she thought she would like to hold her over until her cereal came in at the other place. Classic Granola. At $6.99 a lbs. The 7 grain organic at the other store sells for $1.99. Anyway Whole Foods has these paper bags that you have to use to buy their bulk stuff and they don't look that big. So my wife wanted to get two bags of the stuff. So we filled up 2 of the bags and went to check out and it came to $28 bucks and change. $28 bucks for granola. What the Hell, we can afford it.
When we got home we transferred the stuff into canisters because it's going to be pretty hard scooping it out of those tall skinny bags they give you at Whole Foods. It filled up two 7.5 cup canisters. So, 15 cups worth of Granola.
The next morning my wife ate one cup for breakfast. And she liked it. So far so good. But then later that day the other Health Food store calls and says they got their shipment of the 7 grain organic in. So we went down and got a good supply of that. So I asked my wife if she was going to eat any more of the Granola from Whole Foods. And she said "not right now, I like my cereal better, will you eat it?" So basically I'm stuck with eating $28 bucks worth of "Whole Foods Classic Granola".
Now I'm 71 years old and I learned the value of a dollar somewhere around 1956 when a candy bar was a nickel and a hot dog at the ball game cost a dime. And it doesn't matter how much inflation happens over time, those early impressions stick with you. So that $28 bucks feels to me like $28 bucks in 1956 money. According to the government's inflation index $28 bucks in 1956 is roughly equivalent to $250 bucks today. So there is no way I can let that Granola go to waste.
So I looked it up on the internet and "Whole Foods Classic Granola" has a whopping 260 calories in a half a cup. And ya gotta have milk with it. That's another 160 calories a cup, because I don't do low fat anything.
So yesterday, after having 2,000 calories, I got those late night munchies. Do you know how fast you can rack up a grand of calories at 260 calories a half cup for granola and another 160 calories a cup for whole milk? Pretty d*mned fast. So that's how I got to 3,000 calories yesterday.

I completely screwed the pooch yesterday. For the Super Bowl ritual I bought the store-bought ready to cook in a bag spicy chicken wings @170 calories each, plus they had 390mg of sodium each. I wanted to buy just the raw wings so I could season them myself, but there were none in sight. I ate SIX of those bad boys, I don't even want to do the math on the caloric and sodium intake tallies THEN, I compulsively ate a couple handfuls of the highly sugary and fatally addictive Trader Joe's goodies my brother & his wife gave us, when we visited. I did 105 minutes on the elliptical to try and atone for my sins...should have done some Rosary as well...

I should have blown my calorie count on those instead of that damned granola.

I don't think I'm ever going to lose weight unless I get sent to prison. Portion control seems to be beyond my capabilities.... ...maybe I should just become bulimic. If I step up my exercise, my appetite gets gets crazy. running-around-smiley-emoticon

It seems like the more I work-out the LESS I'm able to practice portion control.... Spoil my appetite? That never happens in my life. running-around-smiley-emoticon <-----my appetite.

Been teetering right on the edge of 150 pounds give or take a few ounces here and there.. Last night was WW and I didn't go... I knew that I had not lost weight so instead stayed home and ate a sensible low point dinner... washed down with a few Vodkas followed by some chocolate cupcakes and pudding and a half box of Wheat Thins and salsa! YEY ME!!! Total points 53!! 30 points over my allotted 23. I have not weighed myself this morning.. but I will be back on track food wise today. And the struggle continues.
