Mitch McConnell has said that the Republicans don't have enough Senate votes at this time to block witnesses. Fingers crossed that inappropriate 'strategies' won't be applied to certain individuals to make things go as Mitch (and Trump) would prefer.

Is you know who thinking 'executive order' about now?
I bet a lot of Senators as well as John Roberts, Supreme Court Chief Justice, would like to be on vacation in the islands about now. It must be hard balancing a positions of confirmed Republican and also a decent, honorable man

With most any witness the House Managers call, it will be challenged by the White House under "executive privilege". I would assume this will present some challenges to the impeachment trial.
Won't any claim of executive privilege have to go through the court system? That could take an inordinate amount of time. In the meantime, we see the election moving closer and closer. If there is a deal between McConnell and Schiff for a "one to one" witness, will the Biden, etc. still have to testify while Bolton, etc. appearances are held up in the courts? If the GOP can get their witnesses to testify and the House's witnesses held up in the courts, why wouldn't they use the excuse of "delay" and move forward with acquittal?
It looks like McConnell is yielding to the idea he doesn't have the votes to move forward without witnesses. So, we would see a President of the United States giving his State of the Union address... and conducting America's business across the globe... while under trial for abuse of power and obstruction. The trial could be suspended, waiting on courts to rule on the executive privilege, to... and beyond the November election.
Hmmm.... That leads to another question. If the trial were suspended past November, Trump is re-elected while Democrats take back the Senate majority, then we would need to hold off the trial until the new Senate was seated. Without McConnell and his majority, Trump could be removed with a simple vote by the new Senate.
Sheesh.... One can see all kinds of scenarios playing out.

Executive Privilege may be a strong defense most of the time however Ziyi was correct earlier on this thread Executive Privileged information does not include possibility of illicit activity. You can’t claim Everything is executive privilege You can’t use EP to hide illicit behavior And the defense that it would be a breach of national security to disclose to Congress. Please.... that is asinine since Congress deals with super secret national security issues all the time in closed session so that is totally bogus EP is just another Trump device to stop testimony that will further convict him of criminal activity. Knowing John, he would cook Trump’s goose rather nicely. Trump is a criminal whether he is removed now or by the American people in November does not really matter as long as his smirking fat face is removed from public office he exploited Trump will for the rest of his life has bought legal cases against him which will haunt him long after he moves to Florida

He guilty he scrambles to hide but the light shines on him he can no run and hide We're now hearing Trump may attempt to keep Bolton's book from being published. This would violate Bolton's rights under the First Amendment. If there are national security revelations within the book, the government could demand those specific comments be stricken. Trump just wants nothing published, stated in public, or written on social media that does not show him in a perfect light. I am reminded of the recent interview with Bloomberg. Bloomberg said Trump had a conversation with him when elected... during the transition between election and inauguration. Trump, knowing Bloomberg had served in public office asked for guidance on how to be successful as POTUS. Bloomberg told Trump, "Surround yourself with people in each and every area who are smarter than you." Trump's replay was, "There is no one smarter than I am!"

Rebecca say and she is fairly knowledgeable in the area of national security issues, that highly unlikely that Mr Bolton has put classified material in his book to be published. He is no dumb!! He know very well that material could no be published! This is Trump panic attack... he is fully aware that this material could potentially put him out of office He can no longer afford any “surprises” If He gets away with this..... there is no justice in America. We have essentially become a dictatorship and there is practically nothing to stop Trump from being King or at least act as if he King if we can’t impeach and remove him and we are civilized and do not subscribe to a coup then we may have 4 (or illegally more) years of this tyranny under Trump

The White House was given a draft copy. I wouldn't be surprised if some retrospective security classification was going on right now. It seems that is what happened to some of Hillary Clinton's emails.

From what I'm reading on news sources this morning, it looks like the GOP has the votes to block witnesses and the whole thing will soon be over with the senate voting in Trump's favor.
The whole impeachment trial, in my view, has been a disgraceful and dishonorable show by the GOP, and may have disastrous consequences for the future of all of us with the senate taking the position that the president can do anything whatsoever he wants (characterizing it as in the country's best interests) and absolutely nobody can do anything about it. This is in direct contravention of the constitution's requirement of congressional oversight. He can lie, conspire with other countries, ignore subpoenas and absolutely whatever else he wants to do.
Think about it -- this is terrifying. I am reminded of the day in March, 1933, when Hitler and his representatives stripped the German parliament of power and the rest, as they say, is history.

If this day ends as I think it will, it will be remembered as one of the darkest days in the history of the USA.
