I've always thought being a Royal had to be a bad job no matter what the compensation. Giving up one's own life to be part of a fairy tale cannot be easy for a free spirit and I think that was Diana's legacy to her boys.
And if we want to talk about nasty ancestors ..... this family has some doozies.

The link doesn't work - got a screen that says Page Not Found.
I don't blame the couple if they want a freer lifestyle, away from the intrusive British press. I admire that they want to discontinue receiving income from British taxpayers. I wish them good luck!

I don't blame them one bit. That kind of world would stifle me to death. I much prefer making my own life decisions. It was bad enough to have a spouse making most of those decisions for me. Also I'm really big on privacy and there is very little for them. I could very quickly become major rebellious - and therefore probably a pariah.

Meghan has been treated badly by the racist British press (and royal family?). However, she knew what she was marrying into and all the rules she would have to follow including how she dresses and not wearing coloured nail polish and silly sh*t like that.
They claim they want to be financially independent and stop the allowance from the Queen, but want to keep the huge allowance they get from Charles. And they also want to keep the big mansion that the taxpayers had to cough up the money for massive refurbishment. Also keep the security detail which is also paid for by the taxpayer (which includes hubby and me).
Once the queen dies I think it's time to get rid of the monarchy. This ain't the 15th century any more.

If the monarchy was to be abolished, I would have thought it would be during WW II and be due to Phillip's German heritage and close family ties to the Nazi Party.

I certainly don't lose sleep over these royals, is there anything in their lives that is "real life"?, do they have assistants putting their pants on them and fastening their bras?
Or helping them have a good BM...couldn't resist.

I don't care about the royals, but I liked Meghan Markle as an actress. Wouldn't it be great if she brought Harry back to the USA and he renounced his bluebloodedness?

As a Canuck, I have no dislike for the British royal family. They provide an element of stability, I suppose, and I like the form of government we have inherited from Britain. However, I consider that royalty in general is an anachronism and should be scaled back considerably once Queen Elizabeth has passed on. I believe that what Harry and Meghan are doing is a step toward bringing the British Monarchy into the 21st century. Kudos to them for that!

If the monarchy was to be abolished, I would have thought it would be during WW II and be due to Phillip's German heritage and close family ties to the Nazi Party. There are many that think it's time to get rid of the monarchy, especially in Scotland and I'm sure quite a lot in England. The over 80's seem to like the Queen the most, even Scots. But not many like Charles, so I think there will be a lot of discussion about getting rid of the monarchy once he is king. Many say they do a lot of charities and that they bring in tourists. I doubt it would affect tourism to not have a monarch. It's not like all the castles and palaces would just disappear if they were gone. There are many countries in Europe that have abolished a monarchy. The UK is a constitutional monarchy, but the monarch has very little power and is not even supposed to give her opinion on politics. For some reason the Scottish First Minister says if we get independence from the UK that we will still keep the monarch as head of state (like Australia, Canada, and all the commonwealth countries). But I like the idea of becoming a republic like Ireland did when got freedom. So we'd have a prime minister and a president.

Thanks, Annie. Interesting. I've loved visiting the U.K. but haven't been since the early 90s and then had little chance to talk with citizens. The British Monarchy and its history has fascinated me since childhood just as it probably does many American girls who grew up on fairy tales of princes, castles, balls and such.
I've watched Queen Elizabeth gracefully mature into the woman she is today as she is just a few years older than me but I've never understood the British views on the Monarchy and finance. It seems a family with such enormous wealth should no longer need outside support.
About remaining the Head of State - having an admirable Head of State, a figurehead of good character, honest and sincere that citizenry can look up to might be a good thing. It might be useful here.
Thanks again for sharing your insight.
