RIP. One of the few Republicans I didn't hate. I voted for him in the 2000 Republican Primary. When the Republicans nominated Bush instead, that's when I quit the Republican Party.

I went down the same path, with the GOP giving the Nation Bush, and California got Schwarzenegger I quit the Repugs in disgust.

I heard a report of his passing this afternoon. He was being praised as a man who was admired for his adherence to principle and for his willingness to dissent when those principles were at odds with the actions of his party. He was a true conservative but not an unthinking one. At least, that is what was being said.
This is a tweet by the Deputy Leader of the Opposition and shadow Foreign Affairs Minister, Sen Penny Wong
Here he is on a recent visit to Australia in the company of senior Labor politicians. Penny Wong is on the far left. As you can see, he looks perfectly at home, waving to someone out of shot.

But the GOP rejected him in favor of George W. Bush. No doubt because the big corporate donors knew he could be easily manipulated to do their bidding. Which he was. McCain was his own man and would have governed by his principles. That's not what the ruling class wants. They want a puppet, which is what George W. Bush was.

John McCain funerals and tributes planned in Phoenix, Washington Yvonne Wingett Sanchez, Arizona Republic Published 8:29 p.m. MT Aug. 25, 2018 | Updated 11:42 p.m. MT Aug. 25, 2018 Thousands are expected to pay their respects to U.S. Sen. John McCain at services and tributes in Arizona and Washington, D.C. The decorated war hero and 2008 Republican presidential nominee served Arizona for more than 30 years on Capitol Hill. He died Saturday afternoon. He was 81. McCain was expected to lie in state in both Arizona and Washington, D.C., where he split his time. He will also have a church service in each city. Information will be updated on johnmccain.com, his former campaign website. A prisoner of war and the grandson and son of four-star admirals in the U.S. Navy, McCain will not be buried near the family patriarchs at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Instead, he will return to his youthful stomping grounds, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, to be buried at the cemetery there. That ceremony was expected to be private. more www.azcentral.com/story/news/politics/arizona/2018/08/25/john-mccain-funeral-schedule-how-honor-senator/1086728002/1

Senator McCain was a man of honour and courage, a rarity among current Republicans. I always admired him as a decent man, a person with integrity, someone worthy of respect. Condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

I didn't always agree with him politically but he was an honorable decent man. I do believe he would have been president had he chosen to run with someone other than Sarah Palin and I also believe he would have been a good one. Great loss.

I recall very specifically during the 2008 campaign examining McCain's stated positions with that of Obama. There were few differences. I had never heard
of Obama, but had been looking for an 'excuse' to vote for McCain for years. Had it not been for his pick of Palin as running mate, he would have had my
vote.
