They are love bugs. I have to say- I'm a 'late bloomer' with being a dog fan, just been the past 15 years.
Fur-kids are awesome!

Yes they sure are awesome! I've had many dogs in my lifetime. They are such great companions. I've also raised several wildlife animals too...raccoon's, a black bear cub, fawns, etc. My last 2 dogs (a black lab and a German shepherd) mothered the heck out of the coons. Good memories and a fun time!

Wonderful post!
Three years ago I adopted an older, very mistreated and neglected pitbull girl. She was very fearful in the beginning, and some friends thought I was nuts to take her on. But something in her eyes spoke to me at the shelter.
Today she 70+ pounds of sweetness. Despite still having some medical issues, she has learned to trust and enjoys her life. She LOVES getting petted and getting her tummy rubbed. She LOVES lounging on the couch and riding in the car and sprawling upside down in the hallway under the swamp cooler vent, and short walks (she's a senior citizen). She loves her baths. She even loves her vet and gives her kisses. She has discovered a love for children and goes to tea parties with the girls next door (they have a hat for her with flowers on it and a bow under the chin). With love and TLC, she has come a long way from a throwaway dog to the perfect companion for me.

What a great story, Butterfly!
My kids found Bella and brought her to me after my husband died, she has been a godsend, I love her to pieces.

I miss ours. She's been gone a long time, but what joy she brought to our lives while with us.

I am still grieving for the loss of my beloved little Yorkie-poo, Chipper. I have had him since he was a teeny-tiny puppy, and had his mother as well. The last year or so, he had really been going downhill, and old age slowly overtook him. He was blind and deaf, and started having trouble being able to get outside to go to the bathroom in time, but overall, he didn’t seem to be in any pain until the last month or two. I knew that we would have to have him put to sleep; but I just could not bring myself to do it until about a week ago. I loved that little fellow like he was one of my kids, not just a dog, and I grieve for him now just like I would if I had actually lost a child. I know that I did the right thing, but my heart and my head were at war about doing it.

I don't usually envy people except those who have dogs as pets, I so wish I had one. I use to pet sit and also volunteer at shelters, just can't do these things anymore. Sigh. My grand-doggie Louie.

I still recall the pain of having to put our dog down and it's been over 10 years since that awful day. Didn't know it would hit me so hard, even though it was the right thing to do for our pet who was clearly suffering (liver failure). Can't ever recall feeling the emotional pain that I felt in the aftermath. I was a mess and so was my wife, who now keeps her dog tag on her keychain as a reminder of happier times. I wish you peace.

Thank you, Kady , and @bob , for the kind words. Did you get another dog, Bob, or just go on without one, and remembering the lost beloved one who has crossed the Rainbow Bridge ? I think that no other dog could ever replace my Chipper, in my heart, and it doesn’t seem like it is worth trying to find a new dog. Plus, at my age, I do not want to die and leave a dog behind, wondering where I went, and longing for me. I worried about that with Chipper, too,but thought that I would likely outlive him. I belong to our local facebook group for lost and found pets, and sometimes there are neglected dogs on there that are noting but skin and bones, and then I wonder if maybe it would be good to rescue one of those dogs, just to give it a good home and better life than it has been having.

I am administering a private FB group for our new community of homeowners, and one of my ideas for getting folks to interact was asking them to post a photo of their dog(s) and tell others about them. It proved a good idea. Several folks have shared their photos of the pets and started to interact on the site. I also had one dog owner ask me if I'd take photos of her dogs, which I'll gladly do for her. We'll take a ride out to the beach and I'll try to get some photos that she can frame.
