And then...there is this... Sven the Goat and Charlie the Dog on their morning romp.... I would get a goat but at this stage in life two dogs is enough to take care of. My neighbor's pony is lonely, a goat would make a great companion for her. I'd thought of getting a goat and dropping it over the fence as a 'surprise' gift.

They are escape artists...mine is, but that is because he was an orphan and bottle fed so he thinks he needs to be with humans and not other grass eating animals. I hike with the goat and the dog, they make things a lot more fun. Both are good company for me. Pets are great !

Daughter and her family have a dozen pygmy goats. When they have babies, the babies are sold to other goat owners. They don't have "milk goats". And, they don't have "meat goats". Mainly just pets.
Daughter came up this past Spring with two goats on leashes. It's about a 90 minute drive. She said the goats laid down in the back of the van and slept the entire trip. Turned them loose in our backyard. They began trying to eat our deck!!! Back on the leashes they went.
Were having some mouse problems around the goat barn. So, they rescued three baby kittens. Curly, Moe, and Larry! The kittens are cats. They climb all over the barn. They catch mice. But, when they run, they jump up and down just like the goats!!!
When down there, we often sit out in the goat pen in lawn chairs. It's pretty scary when a goat jumps up in the chair... on your lap... with no warning! They think they're "lap goats".

And... I think we have a dog for sale!!! Called yesterday afternoon to make an appointment for grooming. Appointment set for tomorrow afternoon. 20 minutes... TWENTY minutes after calling for the appointment, she found something dead in our backyard to roll in. Stunk up the entire house!! So, I had to bathe her... and she doesn't like baths!!!! Her name is Angel. She is referred to more often as "Doofus"!!!

Her name is Angel. She is referred to more often as "Doofus"!!! Our poodle is named Angel and one of her nicknames is doofus. One of our neighbors has a bunch of pygmy goats, had to fence off an area because the goats were chewing the bark off the trees there.

This reminded me of the time we had a cat that had a litter of kittens on top of the barn....there were low hanging tree limbs over this barn....those kittens grew up crawling under those limbs... when they grew up. they'll crawl around hunkered down ever where they went....we called them 'low riders'.

The pain of losing my Bonnie this week is still very raw and I'm still in a serious funk, but I am sure that, as it lessens, I will find another companion. This house is just too quiet, and I miss my Bonnie's gentle presence too much to go on forever without a dog beside me. butterfly , I'm sorry to being seeing this so late, and feel your pain of the loss of Bonnie. In time you will find another dog to share your love with. It took a while, but I DID find another doggie! His name is now Henry and he is a big ol' 70 pound brown oaf of a dog of indeterminate parentage. The shelter had him listed as a blue heeler, but the vet says he is definitely not a blue heeler. So he called him a New Mexico Brown Dog, which of course around here means mutt. I don't care what he is, I love him dearly. We fell in love at first sight/sniff.
He is 7 years old, very lovable and affectionate and well behaved and I'm so grateful to have found him and he's very happy to be a fussed-over house dog. He even stays on his own side of the bed (well, mostly).

I'm so sorry about your Bonnie. I know how much that hurts.
Henry is one lucky dog and I believe he knows it. He probably knows about the bed thing too but hey you have to give him credit for trying.
Enjoy each other. I'm happy for both of you.

Thanks, birdgal. We are BFFs. He a great dog and is enjoying a spoiled semi-retirement. I just can't fathom how such a wonderful dog ended up in the shelter.
Now that it has gotten cold, he loves it when I put a blankie over him when he lays down to sleep. He makes a little sound that is somewhere between a purr and a soft grrr when I put it over him. The other night he woke me up crying in the night because his blankie had slipped off of him; he went right back to sleep when I put it back.
I think he likes it here.

I don't think he likes it there. I think he LOVES it there!
Your post made my day. It's so nice to hear good news once in a while.
Sometimes pets end up in shelters because their humans either died or are sick.
Years ago I had a friend who passed away. His friends had to notify his family because he never saw them. They didn't even know where he lived!
He had a big beautiful dog. A mixed breed. Her name was Lady. His cousin came over to clean up his house so she could sell it. She told us she would take the dog to the pound. I don't think so. He died in his 40's. The last time his cousin saw him he was 5!
We took Lady home with us. She already knew our pets and fit right in. She had a long, fun, and happy life. She missed her human. Who wouldn't? But she had a new family and a new life with people who loved her and dogs and cats who did too.
Enjoy your new Best Friend! I only have cats now but I know the groan happy dogs make.
I'm so happy for both of you.

I'm so glad you took Lady in and gave her a good life. A second chance is a wonderful gift to give a dog.
