Just last Fall Misty had to be put down, being a Schnauzer+Pomeranian mix, the Schnauzer part or her made her prone to pancreatitis. Not to mention, she had bladder stones. And seizures, cause unknown. Poor baby, she had a lot of health problems, but she was the best! Misty is in my avatar, and will always be in my heart. At the time Misty was failing, with the most recent go-round of pancreatitis, Mija's labs were almost as bad as Misty's, but Mija was not symptomatic. It wasn't long before Mija started experiencing the symptoms of pancreatitis. I wish she could be on my health-care insurance. And, along with pancreatitis Mija has diabetes. And, as a consequence, she now has cataracts . <sigh> It is an absolute heart-breaker, but life is what it is, we'll make adjustments and carry-on. Mija, and Angel

Gosh, I am so sorry. I know the feeling. My Mr. Morris is heading down that road. He is 13 and suffering from a number of things, none of the painful, just those elderly things a dog experiences.
I am so sorry for your loss.

My little Chipper (Yorkie-poo) is over 15 years old, and he has slowed down a lot. He mostly just lays around now and does’n’t even try to get on the recliner any more. If I pu him up there, then I have to watch him so that i can help him back down again when he wants down. All of his life, chipper has slept beside me on the bed.....until the day that he fell off and I started worrying that at his age, he could easily break a rib or his leg. I got him one of those little screened in foldable crates and put that by the bed, but on the floor, and now he sleeps there. He knows that he is close to me; but I di nothave to worry about him falling off and getting hurt anymore. He has also been losing his eyesight, and his hearing is not as good anymore either, although the word “chicken” seems to still get through to him pretty darn good ! I know that he probably will not last a whole lot longer; because I can see his health deteriorating, even with special food and vitamins. Right now, he does not seem to be in any kind of pain; so we just adjust ourselves to his lack of vision and mobility, and carry him around when he needs to go outside and potty. We call it “HandiRide”, whichis what our local handicapped transportation is called. I can relate to what you are feeling with your little one, and am sad that you lost Misty, tnthomas. It is so hard when they have been such a big part of our life for so many years. I remember when Chipper was a tiny puppy, and he slept under my chin.

Sundown, thank you, I know how much Chipper has a big piece of your heart...dogs are a gift of love from God.

tnthomas, I know how very hard it is to watch a beloved pet come to the end of his life. I just wish they could live longer.
I'm so sorry.
Sundown, I'm sorry to hear about your little one, too. It is so hard. My dogs are my family.

Thank you, Butterfly and highlanderannie. I've been looking for some kind of device a blind dog could wear, to keep from bumping their head into things. A girl at the veterinarian's office suggested a dog halo: But, good grief they are $90+, which wouldn't bother me, if I could be certain that it would fit properly. Right now I'm looking at other made-for-doggies accessories that are less expensive, but might serve the purpose of protecting Mija's head: Even if the hat doesn't provide protection, it's still cute as all get out! Angel had to try on the hat too; she just loves it!

Chipper bumps into everything now, too; but he seems to have adjusted to needing to go slow and that way, he does not just crash into things as bad. My husband put up little “railings” for Chipper so that he does not fall of of the porch ramp when he is walking out to the yard to do his chores, and every time he goes outside, one of always stays right there and watches him. One time he was wandering, and i went back inside to put on my sandals, and by the time I had gotten back out to the yard, that little fellow had wandered down the driveway and into the street. Thankfully, it is a pretty quiet street, and there was no traffic; but after that episode, we are extra careful when he goes out. I have noticed that sometimes he walks in circles now, and am concerned that he might have had a slight stroke or something, but it could be that he is just disoriented. I just can’t bear the idea of taking him to the vet to be put to sleep, and as long as he is comfortable and can function, I am going to put off the inevitable .

I'm sorry to hear of Chipper's blindness, it's such a heart breaker. Mija has recently had more gastrointestinal problems, costing $1000 per occurrence. I expect that we'll have to make the decision soon.... It's a terrible sadness, it's been around a year since her sister Misty had to be put down. Same thing, pancreatitis. In addition, Misty had bladder stones, seizures and knee problems. Schnauzer-poms just have so many health problems, they should stop breeding these animals so tightly.
