Chipper bumps into everything now, too; but he seems to have adjusted to needing to go slow and that way, he does not just crash into things as bad. My husband put up little “railings” for Chipper so that he does not fall of of the porch ramp when he is walking out to the yard to do his chores, and every time he goes outside, one of always stays right there and watches him. One time he was wandering, and i went back inside to put on my sandals, and by the time I had gotten back out to the yard, that little fellow had wandered down the driveway and into the street. Thankfully, it is a pretty quiet street, and there was no traffic; but after that episode, we are extra careful when he goes out. I have noticed that sometimes he walks in circles now, and am concerned that he might have had a slight stroke or something, but it could be that he is just disoriented. I just can’t bear the idea of taking him to the vet to be put to sleep, and as long as he is comfortable and can function, I am going to put off the inevitable . I'm sorry to hear of Chipper's blindness, it's such a heart breaker. Mija has recently had more gastrointestinal problems, costing $1000 per occurrence. I expect that we'll have to make the decision soon.... It's a terrible sadness, it's been around a year since her sister Misty had to be put down. Same thing, pancreatitis. In addition, Misty had bladder stones, seizures and knee problems. Schnauzer-poms just have so many health problems, they should stop breeding these animals so tightly. I am deeply sorry.... I know... pets can be like family.... it is shame when late in life so many problems....

Mija's health took a turn for the worse today, her pancreatitis returned. Being both retired, we have only a fixed income to live on, had already spent $7 thousand this year on Mija's medical procedures, with no evidence that continuing down this path would produce anything but temporary relief for her. So, we made the decision to have her euthanized. We are consumed with sadness, and a deep sense of loss. Mija's sister Misty had to be put down just last December, due to pancreatitis as well. Mija will be together with her sister Misty on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.

thomas, I am so sorry to hear this. I understand, because sadly I've been in this position myself too many times. It is just heartbreaking, but I'm sure you made the right decision in letting her go humanely -- but I know that doesn't ease your pain over this.
Will you get another pet? When I had to let my dear old Harold go almost three years ago I went to the Humane Society and found my dear Bonnie, an older dog that had been overlooked by adopters mostly looking for puppies. She has brought me much joy and love -- she is about 10 now, and does have some health issues, too, but I am so glad I found her and brought her sweet love into my life. The companionship of dogs is a great gift to me, even though I know I'll eventually have to let them go.
Again, I am so sorry for your loss of your beloved doggie.

Thanks Butterfly. We do have another dog- Angel, whom we got after Mija's sister Misty had to bet put down, last December. Angel with Mija It will probably be a couple months but we're definitely getting a second dog, as dogs desperately need another dog for their emotional and psychological well being. A lady in the SilverSneakers class at the gym has a small dog rescue, I'll be talking to her and see what kind of dogs she has. The Schnauzer-pom mix that Mija & Misty were is just too fraught with health problems. Misty had; pancreatitis, bladder stones, seizures, luxating patella(knee slippage). Mija had pancreatitis. diabetes. cateracts, and glaucoma. Might get another poodle, I have heard they're a pretty healthy breed...and smart too.

There are so many dogs out there looking for homes. My Bonnie is a sweet pittie girl who had a history of being abused. She is a bit leery of other dogs due to her history (at least that's what we think) and is happy being an only dog. I've always had more than one dog before I had her, but for now I have just her. She was scared when I first brought her home, but when she figured out she was going to be a spoiled house dog with a doggie door and couches and comfy blankets and her own pillow, she reveled in it and acts like she thinks I hung the moon. I was very lucky to find her and I just love her dearly. I get lots of sloppy kisses and she makes a sound kind of like purring when I pet her.

I understand that. Having dogs and receiving the joy and unconditional love outweighs the hurt when they're gone, in my view. Right now, I'd much rather have a broken arm, instead of what I'm feeling.

We're looking, but probably won't get another dog until after the first of the year. A lady at the gym runs a small dog rescue--->>> www.saveasmalldogrescue.org/Leaning towards another poodle, or some kind of terrier, just not a Schnauzer unfortunately. Never knew they had such health problems. Had mom & daughter Schnausers in the early 2000s, they lived to be 12-1/2 years old each. The mom(Lady) was overweight and ended up with heart failure. The daughter dog(Toby) developed diabetes and succumbed to a weird infection in her eyes. I think they both could have lived a couple more years, but we didn't understand just how important it was/is, to avoid giving them fatty foods, table scraps etc.
