JRP: What is the “shared language” between Donald Trump and Red-State Christians?
AD: A man who worked in a steel mill in Appalachia told me how frustrating his career was because the company had been outsourced. Instead of a local family running things, the owner’s son had moved operations. Now they got their checks from New Jersey instead of the local bank. It was clear that he preferred the local owner to the distant one. I compare that to many Red-State Christians’ embrace of Trump. Yes, he is often wealthier than them – but he’s “their rich guy.” He eats Taco Bell on Cinco de Mayo, he’s slightly overweight and his suits don’t fit right, he spells words wrong, he curses, he’s “politically incorrect.” Trump has an instinctual knack for speaking in ways that make people who are very different than him feel as if they’re close to him, such as the times he served fast food to championship athletes: food many Red-State Christians would connect with their day-to-day lives as well.
JRP: What did Hillary Clinton represent to Red-State Christians?
AD: Everything they didn’t want. Their utmost fear: that America was becoming unrecognizable to them; that the era of white male dominance was ending in America – was summed up in Hillary. Where Trump appeared relatable, she appeared distant. Her inability to connect emotionally hurt her as well. Somehow, she represented a global-economic complex in ways that Trump didn’t, even though he was much more ruthless in his pursuit of personal wealth at others’ expense. They didn’t trust Hillary; they trusted Donald Trump.

Things that are difficult to understand...
"Evangelicals"?? Who are they? Aren't they the "holy roller" side of the Christian religion? Pentecostals... Southern Baptist... AME... A large segment of these denominations are black! Why would black pastors try to persuade their congregants to worship Trump? They don't, do they?
Catholics... Most people of Mexican heritage are Catholics. The Catholic Church is based in Italy. Why, with the child molesting scandal, etc. with Catholicism and the larger percentage of the Church not even being Caucasian Americans would they support Trump? Do they?
The Evangelical Cult of Trumpism is mainly headquartered in the non-denominational mega-churches. The television evangelists. The millionaire pastors who jet across the land in their private planes. The more they can "scare" their audiences that Democrats kill babies... that Democrats are LGBTQ... that Democrats want to elevate women to the same level as men in politics... that Democrats are wanting to kill Christianity and turn the nation over to Islam... and the ONLY way it can be stopped is send money! Send money to our mega-church so we can reach more people, have more expensive cars, have bigger churches, and have anything else we deem necessary to spread the Word! It's sales. It's all about money! Trump has openly broken at least 8 of the 10 Commandments, but send us money because we "need" him. He's been anointed by God... send us money! He's going to overturn Roe v. Wade... toss an extra $50 in the collection plate! He's going to keep us from having to pay taxes... can you handle a little more cash each Sunday?
It's not the true Christians in the black churches. It's not the true Biblical scholars who understand that Christ never once mentioned homosexuals, mixed marriages, imprisoning children in cages. It's the money hungry leaders who understand the means to an end.

I lived in the bible belt (East TN) throughout the 90's. I don't know how the coworkers/friends I had there feel about Trump now, but I know they would never vote for anyone except a republican. I had the idea that one of the main issues for them was who said they were pro life.
Comments I overheard when I worked there (at a university) about gays were - hate the sin, love the sinner. Ugh! I bit my tongue. A lot.

I am considered pervert because I happen to love woman.... very sad I see gay couples holding hands here in Scotland. They are comfortable to do that here. As far as I can tell, there is not a lot of homophobia here. Although there's always some everywhere. Who we fall in love with is no one's business. Love is love! Why does anybody care what anyone else does if it's consenting adults? One thing I love about Thailand is that everybody is free to be who they are and no one judges them. So you see lots of gay couples, lots of people dressing any way they want (which would be called weird in US and UK), lots of what they call 'lady boys'. Everybody is free to express themselves.

highlandannie ~ Do you think that acceptance of others is because Scotland and Thailand are not influenced by Christianity? Seems to me that religion and quoting the Bible cause a lot of trouble in the U.S.

I'm sure there are some places in the US where this doesn't happen, but you two are stuck in DC with your jobs.

Seems to me that religion and quoting the Bible cause a lot of trouble in the U.S. Scotland is majority Christian but there are few evangelicals. Church attendance is not high, nobody cares if you go to church or not, and religion is certainly not part of the government. No politician would say 'God Bless Scotland'. Attitudes by most in Scotland are 'live and let live'. There is racism and bigotry etc so Scotland isn't free of it either. As for Thailand - it's about 95% Buddhist - who you are is who you are. Period.

The population is 4,500. I visited there because my husband's cousin lived there with her partner. The town, of course, also leans left politically. Hebden Bridge

I could sell practice no a problem but Rebecca is more or less tied to her position with the government
