ICE may be forced to release thousands after Republicans kill border billFacing a $700 million budget shortfall, officials at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) may be forced to release thousands of immigrants into the U.S. because Republicans, at the urging of Donald Trump, killed a massive bipartisan Senate bill that would have injected $7.6 billion into the agency. "Faced with record numbers of illegal crossings at the Mexico border and mounting criticism from his own party," The Washington Post reports, "Biden has deployed ICE officers more aggressively and ramped up deportation flights in recent months. White House officials say the administration has deported or returned 500,000 migrants since May, more than Trump did on an annual basis during his term." "The bill’s demise has led ICE officials to begin circulating an internal proposal to save money by releasing thousands of detainees and cutting detention levels from 38,000 beds to 22,000 — the opposite of the enforcement increases Republicans say they want." linkSmart move on the part of republicans, right oldmontana ? Blame needs to fall where it belongs!

I am so sick and tired of hearing about the border problem being Bidens fault. Damn it all...how much more brown-nosed can the GOP get. Can't they find a backbone and stand up for what's actually right? If they can't, I hope hope to see more retirements!

how much more brown-nosed can the GOP get. Can't they find a backbone and stand up for what's actually right? Some personal thoughts: I long for the day when civility might return, when the GOP might embrace honor and respectability again. But, I suspect that won't happen in my lifetime, me being [almost] 72. I imagine how the older Germans must have felt during Hitler's reign, and the ensuing chaos. I fear that our nation is in for much more chaos, possibly becoming a permanent condition in our society.
I miss being an optimist, but being a realist just seems more to the point.

The GOP behavior, is playing politics with thousands of lives, in the US and around the world, and putting party before the good of the country.
I read one Republican say, I can't believe the Democratic Party is becoming the party of national defense.
The border bill was what the GOP asked for, until, trump reminded them, if they fixed the border, they had no Ideas to run on!
People are starting to see the economy is Good, so all the GOP has is calling, Biden old, but the old Guy is doing a good job.
trump is doing a good job of scaring Republican, US house members, and also voter, this has not worked for the GOP in elections leading up to the presidential election.

As if the current House GOP isn't bad enough... The Speaker is shutting down the House at 2:30 this afternoon and sending everyone home for a 2 week "vacation". They will return on February 28. Why?
The newly elected Dem from NY was to be sworn in today. That would have added a Dem vote to the border bill and, perhaps, a 3rd vote on the sham impeachment of Myorkas. Also, the government runs out of money on March 1. Each time funding the government has come up under this House, at the last minute a short term deal has been struck. This has agitated TFG and his minions. They want the government shut down to continue their push to wreck havoc by any means they can. Shutting down the House eliminates the opportunity for common sense to prevail and they will get their shut down on March 1.
We are living in uncharted territory. A main political party's candidate for POTUS has sworn to shut down democracy and name himself as the last word in law and order. His promise to forsake our allies has Europe nervous. His promise to imprison any political foes should worry every single citizen of the U.S. Yet, millions are cheering him on!!! Some of his biggest cheerleaders are the media outlets. Not only is Fox rooting for him, but CNN/MSNBC/CBS have all joined his cheering squad. The billionaires who own the media outlets know the high viewership TFG brings vs. the "boring" current POTUS who just get things done without fanfare or constant turbulence.
I honestly believe we may not even see a free and fair election in 2024. Armed MAGA may well block polling places. They may burn ballot boxes and drag voting machines into the street, bashing them into a pile of useless debris. 2024/25 will be history making...not all for the best, I'm afraid.

It's impossible for a layman like me to follow all the breadcrumbs, but in my heart, I know all this disruption and corruption stems from greed. I know that, if big money wasn't allowed to control politics, many of the problems we face wouldn't exist. Everything we're complaining about are mere symptoms of a broken political system. The rich and powerful benefit as long as we continue to allow it to be broken. They profit as long as we are fighting amongst ourselves, yet no one is working to address the core problem. We simply continue to fight about symptoms of the core problem while ignoring the core problem. I don't know how we can ever change the system. Unless a very powerful person makes this an issue that can't be ignored and gains a massive following that will cast votes to change our campaign finance regulations, we'll continue to fight amongst ourselves about symptoms, and things will likely become worse as the rich continue to gain more and more power over our governance.

There are too many people who couldn't care less about politics. They say thoughtless things like both parties are the same or other dangerous and stupid things.
It's obvious many Americans have no vision for the USA. I believe there is a verse in the Bible that warns us, "Where there is no vision the people perish."
You might not be interested in politics but politicians are very interested in you.
Open your eyes before it's too late or bend down and kiss your behind and the behinds of your friends and families goodbye.
Am I an alarmist? I am. Especially when there is something to be alarmed about. Are you?

Open your eyes before it's too late or bend down and kiss your behind and the behinds of your friends and families goodbye. Am I an alarmist? I am. Especially when there is something to be alarmed about. Are you? You're right on all counts, but I'm not an alarmist...or maybe I am. I recognize the threats. I follow and participate on this forum. I repost what I believe to be informative memes on social media. I spend about two hours a day posting and doing research online, and I watch a variety of news shows on TV including rare visits to FOX News. I feel I'm not an alarmist because I have faith our democracy will prevail and be stronger after we come out of this turmoil. I believe Trump will be gone, either because of his crimes, or because of the election in November. Trump is like P. T. Barnum. I would reluctantly have to call Trump the greatest salesman in history, but like all salesmen who lie about their product, their lies eventually catch up to them. I believe we're witnessing Trump's collapse. His lies are catching up to him. When you consider all the MAGA losses, Trump has lost more elections than any president in modern history - maybe in our entire history. He's making serious gaffs, likely due to his age, but also likely due to getting his lies twisted in his head. He said he wants to: be a dictator, dismantle the DOJ, eliminate healthcare for millions of people, and destroy NATO. His solutions for the border crisis are absurd. He brags about overturning Roe. This list of negatives goes on and on. I believe Trump will be "gone" relatively soon, and I don't know of anyone who can replace him. Like him or not, no one can sell like Trump, and once he's gone, no one will command the news cycle like him. I have faith the system will survive and become stronger after he's gone. I think Trump will lose one way or another, and the loss of the seat in New York is a sign of a massive shift coming in November. If Americans put Trump back into office, we'll deserve the NAZI leadership we'll get, but I don't think that will happen.

I would like to have even a little bit of the faith you have. I hope you're right. Sometimes it feels as if Republicans are voting against the Democrats and not really for their candidate. Anyone will do as long as she or he is not a Democrat. Unity would be nice but I don't think that will ever happen again. Too bad. Divided we fall.

Anyone will do as long as she or he is not a Democrat. Unity would be nice but I don't think that will ever happen again. Too bad. Divided we fall. We've only had more unity at times, but we've always had division. My dad was a staunch believer is supply and demand, therefore he was against unions. He believed the free market would sort things out. He was a very smart man, so I'd love to hear his take on what's happening today. We've had violent demonstrations for decades because of unions, race, wars, etc. We've never really had unity. Division became worse however, when Citizens United came into being. That allowed a new influx of money without disclosing sources to work to divide us even more. It's that money - campaign financing and support from PACs that's designed to elect people who are willing to promote division by any means possible. We have some of the sleaziest people on the planet - people with a complete lack ethics and integrity who have sold their souls to become puppets for the rich. It's that money that's at the root of division. Take money out of politics and all that's left is the best interests of we, the people.

When I worked I belonged to a union. I'm not saying the union people were perfect, but neither were the managers and bosses of the company.
When a few people have absolute control over other people it's easy to take advantage. When I got a promotion and became a manager I saw both sides and understood both sides.

I get sick of hearing people condemn unions by talking about the corruption that has occurred without taking into consideration the corruption of businesses. When it comes down to it, we live in a corrupt society. Like you said, people have a lot more power to defend themselves when there is a collective effort. I understand both sides as well, but all one has to do is look at the numbers that show that in 1965, CEO to worker compensation was about 20:1. Today, it's over 350:1. Since 1978 CEO compensation rose over 1400%, while worker compensation only rose by 18%. With numbers like that, the need for unions is blatantly apparent. True! People will take advantage of other people if they can get away with it.
