Granddaughter passed the State Boards for her RN 1 year ago last month. She's been working labor/delivery at a local hospital. Works lots of nights, mainly due to the pay incentive. Volunteers to be on call when she's not scheduled.
Nights they seldom have inducements. Can be a little slow. So, she gets called to the ER when they get hit with more than the scheduled staff can handle. Two nights ago, she was working ER when a 90 year old gentleman came in who had suffered a bad stroke. He went into cardiac arrest. She took chest compressions. The ER doc kept telling her "harder!". She was giving it all she had when she heard a pop. Yep! Broke one of the patient's ribs. (This is not that uncommon while doing chest compressions.) After some time, the ER Doc "called it". They called time of death. As she was backing away, they heard a gurgle and they had a pulse. Called for air transport and he was still alive as he was loaded onto the copter. Said the rib issue didn't shake her as much as calling the death, starting to walk away, and he "came back to life".
