New VA plan: Vets facing 30 minute...~~~~ WASHINGTON — Veterans who live more than 30 minutes from a Veterans Affairs medical clinic or face a wait of more than 20 days for most health care appointments would be eligible for expanded private-sector medical options under new proposed guidelines unveiled by department officials on Wednesday. The new standards would replace the 40-mile, 30-day guidelines currently in place for most veterans and could dramatically expand the number of outside health care appointments that VA will have to fund in coming years. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I have always wondered why the veterans don't get health care close to home. So many have to drive for hours to get to a VA clinic or hospital. The rest of the article is at the link I posted. I do know that it will hopefully go forward. My husband isn't getting any better and having care nearer to home would be good.

Agreed. The care of our veterans has been a national disgrace since Vietnam.

Good news indeed. I don't depend on the VA but know that millions of vets struggle to get the care they deserve.

The part that makes me furious is that I need to take my husband to a doctor and HE is not well. Local is the smarter thing to do, less travel,...right?
Yet right now to get him to see a local doctor I have to see his provider 85 miles away, she has to refer him to the Madison VA ortho people, then those folks make a call and we end up with another appt a month away for a consult, then a consult to OT, then a consult for surgery...and meanwhile hubby gets less and less able to move around. Then they consider trying to get him seen locally....
I did just make an appt for him locally.
After not hearing about a request for an appt for over a week I got a message that a consult was 'put in'. It takes two or three requests before they call and generally 3 to 6 weeks to be seen.
Nonsense! Sorry, bit of a rant.
