Montenegro has been in the news thanks to Donald Trump's response to a question Fox News’ Tucker Carlson in an interview on Tuesday. Tucker asked “Why should my son go to Montenegro to defend it from attack?”
Trump answered, “I understand what you’re saying,” and then accused the people of Montenegro of having the potential to start WWIII because of their “very aggressive” nature. His exact words, "I’ve asked the same question. Montenegro is a tiny country with very strong people … They’re very aggressive people. They may get aggressive, and congratulations, you’re in world war three.”
Understandably the President of Montenegro took offence. See here for his exact response: secondnexus.com/news/montenegro-says-size-doesnt-matter/2/
Montenegro, roughly the size of Connecticut, joined NATO in June 2017. They are the 29th, and latest, nation to join. They wish to join the EU as well. Russia, who is not a NATO member, vocally disapproved of Montenegro’s 2017 inclusion in NATO. Russia has also been charged with meddling in Montenegro’s elections and staging a failed coup attempt in 2016.
Montenegro is a tiny nation that was once part of Yugoslavia before it disintegrated. It was the only part of former Yugoslavia that was not involved in the war. The people are proud of their history. Some have noted, in the wake of Trump’s comments about the aggressive nature of Montenegrins, that the United States President famously shoved then Prime Minister of Montenegro, Duško Marković, out of his way to get to the front of a photo op at a 2017 NATO gathering.
Comments on Twitter have connected the dots and are openly saying that Trump's interest in Montenegro stems from his secret meeting with Vladimir Putin in Helsinki. Russia is very unhappy about former Soviet Union countries joining NATO.
Is it too hard to believe that the Tucker Carlson interview was set up for a reason?
