I'd say without a doubt it's an acquired- taught- attitude. One example that occurred to me when I was reading news articles recently- long ago, I read a magazine interview of a semi-popular American singer; he said when he turned 13, his father took him to a prostitute- clearly teaching 'this is what women are for- use them, discard them.' Second, the most eye-opening book I've ever read: The Status Seekers, by Vance Packard. Published in 1959, much of it is still relevant today- including women who are raised to believe they should 'accept beatings' from their husbands and boyfriends, and girls raised to believe they 'owe' sexual favors if a guy gives them a ride or buys them a small gift. I've been in bad environments, but current locale is the worst; quite a few years ago, for example, I guy I knew (50+ yrs old) said 'When a girl says 'no,' she really means 'yes'- or she at least means 'maybe.' Until we get rid of these beliefs and attitudes, we've got a looong way to go.

I keep referring to Alvin Toffler's book from 1970: "Future Shock". He details why we are failing to keep the pace of social development equal to technological advances. We are overwhelmed with our reality facing it with instincts which were obsolete long ago. Our evolution is physical first and try as we may...it's hard to accept social tenets which contradict survival behavior. Enlightened males do not excuse sexual assault and are not belligerent warriors...but they are in the minority. Most are born with aggression as a given...genetically and socially. We live in a civilization that prises competition and confrontation, till that changes...we won't.
