Anyone here have any advice on hiking backpacks or know of a good source that I can go to?
I find my normal day packs woefully awful on causing back pain while hiking 6+ miles in rough terrain. From what I now understand, I should have a back pack that is proper for my torso length and has a waist belt to have the weight stabilized and carried by my hips. I am a very small person, so finding the right combo is going to be hard. I want it to be used as a pack to carry my camera stuff and of course emergency camping gear.
I read some articles on backpacks by REI and other outfitters, but I'd like to actually go to a place and talk with someone. Just curious.

I have a Jansport which is very sturdy, but I find I get sore shoulders after a while with any backpack.

I have a Jansport which is very sturdy, but I find I get sore shoulders after a while with any backpack. The trick is not to have the weight held by your shoulders, but by your waist. The shoulders straps should also have a sternum strap to help ease things off the shoulders. That is what I am finding out. I go for very long hiking trips at least 4 to 6 to 8 miles depending on the route in rough terrain, so I am looking to avoid pain in the back and shoulders!

I'm a huge fan of LL Bean up in Maine. Great selection and customer service either in person or over the phone. Also, on their website you'll find a wealth of info and reviews from customers on virtually all their products. Also in Maine, you'll find very good advice at Kittery Trading Post. Excellent staff there and a great selection of equipment on their website.

I picked up one crappy one at Walmart with adjustable straps, ... after a 5 mile hike yesterday I can say it helped tremendously. My next step is to go to a store like LL Bean or REI and get properly fitted for what I want to do. I am thinking about adding an overnight trip to my hiking. I will need some help! I'm 5' 3" and slight of frame so I can't just grab any old pack and go.

My sister orders from LL Bean a lot, but I always buy a lot of clothes, etc from REI on our annual visits to Michigan.

I've ordered camping stuff from Campmor. They are pretty decent. I've also used Sierra Trading Post, REI, and of course Amazon.
I've got a fairly nice Gregory backpack that I hardly ever use. And a smaller North Face. They both make good stuff.
If you haven't already, I highly recommend reading "The Complete Walker" by Colin Fletcher. It's an amazing book.

We mainly buy the zip off nylon, fast drying trousers because they are so good for travel. Security pockets for passports, etc. And I wear them zipped off in Thailand and on summer visits to US. Yes, they are pricey but sometimes sales.
