Poor hubby... can't catch a break.. As some of you know, my husband had a radical prostatectomy last April for prostate cancer. He underwent the Da Vinci robotic procedure.. and in spite of it being "less invasive" it was a long and grueling difficult procedure. Fortunately, he had a great pathology result.. and is now cancer free with his PSA now being undetectable.. meaning the cancer was localized in the prostate and had not spread..
Unfortunately, a few months ago he noticed a painful lump in his groin.. which has been diagnosed as a inguinal hernia. His urologist has confirmed that this is a direct result of the surgery. Our internist has confirmed that it IS a hernia and I guess some men live with this without too much trouble. Hubby is now wearing a Truss and the hernia appears to be getting bigger and more painful...It 's now the size of a tennis ball.. so yes... surgery is the only option. I HATE the thought of that poor man undergoing another surgery so soon after his prostatectomy.. I was hoping we could at least wait until a year had passed.. or perhaps avoid it altogether.. but it appears that will not be possible. So he sees his Urologist on the 24th and we likely will go ahead and make an appointment with a general surgeon for his Hernioplasty. Generally this is an outpatient procedure and he will return home that same day, but it's STILL surgery and it's still another anesthesia.. He did not do well the last time he was put under and had three instances of apnea.. I am very concerned.

I'm sorry to hear your husband will have to go through another surgery QuickSilver. It's good he has an appointment with the Urologists so quickly to get this taken care of. I can only imagine, for the size it has grown, how much pain his must be in. Hopefully he will do better pulling through the anesthesia this time. Sending good vibes your way.

Sorry to hear that your husband will need another procedure, @quicksilver. Perhaps with this surgery there will be an alternative to the anesthesia he received in the last procedure, one that might be more tolerable than general? It's scary getting older and having to face medical issues like this. Sending you and your husband best wishes for a quick and successful treatment and recovery.

I think that a local or spinal is possible with this procedure.. So We will ask the surgeon.. Hubby has very bad spinal arthritis so not sure if this would be a viable option. Also.. perhaps his bad reaction to anesthesia in April had to do with the fact that he was under nearly 6 hours.. The hernia procedure would not be nearly as long.. So again will discuss with the Surgeon.

Sorry to hear that your husband is having such a rough time QuickSilver. Hernia repair is much simpler than his last surgery, and he should sail through it easily, and recover quickly.

I am so sorry he has such problem....hopefully surgery will ease his pain.... yes.. thank you all... Looking on the bright side, had he not taken the drastic step of having a Prostatectomy, we may have been looking at a different outcome for sure.. Pathology indicated that his cancer was actually more aggressive than the initial biopsy showed. Trading metastatic prostate cancer for an inguinal hernia seems like a good deal when you look at the whole picture.

Sad to hear that your husband has to have another surgery, but at least it sounds like this one will not be as long or as traumatic as the other one, and possibly they can keep him awake during the procedure. Six hours was a long time for him to be kept under anesthetic, so I can see why that would have been much worse and harder to recover from. When I had the first heart procedure a couple of years ago, it was actually two procedures, one after the other; and i was out for most of the day, and it took me a while to come back to an actual recovery. I think that I was out for most of the night afterwards, and only vaguely remember seeing my daughter and husband when I did finally wake up. Prayers for you and your husband as he goes through this next surgery !
