Amish kids had a big party at the pond down the road. Temperature topped out a 8 degrees f yesterday with a wind chill of 2 0r 3 below. A few boys showed up early with a produce wagon loaded with fire wood. They then shoveled the pond clear for a hockey rink. From about 11:00 AM on there has been a steady stream of buggies going by. Probably 20 or 30 at the pond when we went by. Got to hand it to these kids. The local Bishop has decreed that no unmarried persons will ride in an enclosed vehicle. Power of love must be strong as couple after couple have driven by exposed to the weather with only a blanket between them and Jack Frost. Some of these kids have driven 10 or more miles to party.
They had one of these last summer that got out of hand with the drinking. Sheriffs Deputies broke that one up. No cops have shown so this one must be quieter!

Sounds like a great place for a party.

Probably the Amish Rumspringa. It allows them to let their hair down and experiment with some wild times before they commit to the church.

No not Rumspringa. This was just a New Years Day party. The Pond is a very active social spot for the Amish kids.
Please don't make the mistake some do and put the Amish on some kind of pedestal of virtue and goodness. They are jut people and their closed society hides all manner of social ills.

Um I don't, I live surrounded by Amish and helped a girl whose case went national regarding child abuse. They are like anyone else. Good and bad.

We have gotten to be heavily Amish and to a lessor extant Mennonite. Many around here do not like them, many are misinformed about them. I like that they have bought many many farms that were just a few years away from abandonment or purchase by the BTO's. When the BTO buys a farm the house, barns, and buildings are torn down, the hedgerows are removed and ditches rerouted so the farmer can get his penny out of every square inch. He then plants corn or beans. In contrast the Amish build more buildings, Make sure shade islands exist in the interior of their fields, grow a great variety of produce and livestock, much of it organic. They are very atuned to the markets and can turn their operations to what sells in a very short time. Many have emigrated East from Michigan and Wisconsin, how bad can it be there to make NY look good to them?
The only bad that I can see is that they forced the county to legislate against Puppy Mills, although the operations have only moved to Yates county which has not legislated against.
My father keeps a phone in his basement for their use. 6 families use it for business, keep it pretty much tied up from 7am to about 8:30. They keep alog and pay up promptly each month.
They seem to have a different outlook on life than most of us. Their children have quite a high death rate, due to equipment and animal accidents. The men seem to be careless and an extraordinary number of them lose their lives in manure pits.

That is quite interesting, Robusta. Thanks for the information.
I don't understand if you are for or against puppy mills. Are the Amish for or against them?

Some Amish run puppy mills and I know some that do not. I had some very nice friends of mine start a puppy mill and moved because their state started regulating them more. What I saw was pretty nasty.
Many of our local Amish do some very successful businesses in furniture making, cabinet making, and they do a lot of construction.
