My beef,,,,, why do Churches have crosses on them ? long before Jesus was crusified the Roman empire used crusification as one of the means for death penalty, and yet Christianity honors the cross. Back when I was young and ignorant I didn't question stuff,,, in my older years though I have major beefs with organized religion. I think Smitty that is why Catholics honor Jesus on the cross, not just the cross itself. They honor the fact that He died for our sins. nkat

At least with the Muslim religion they honor a rock that fell from space that didn't hurt anyone.

There would be giant electric chairs on top of church buildings and Christian schools. People would have electric chair necklaces and ear rings. There's a church in town that celebrates Good Friday by having a guy with a cross on his back walk around the neighborhood. I guess he could put a chair on his back. Children would have Jesus in an electric chair hanging over their bed. The Catholic church would celebrate the stations of the electric chair. "The old rugged electric chair" would be a favorite hymn. Put some butter on my behind because I'm on a roll. lol.

In first century Rome the cross was a dangerous symbol and Christianity became an underground sect. They used a crude outline of a fish as their secret symbol for recognition purposes.
There could be many reasons why the cross became a universal symbol but I suspect that it had something to do with Emperor Constantine who thought it was a miraculous talisman that he had his army carry before them into battle. Later it became a symbol of ultimate sacrifice, of Christ dying to remove the sins of mankind. I haven't researched this idea but I do know that wherever I travel in this world, if I see a building displaying a cross, I know that I can enter and ask for help if I need it.
I have my own personal symbol of the crucifixion that I like to hold in my hand at Easter time to remind me of the enormity of Jesus' sacrifice. It is a small replica of the kind of nails that the Romans would have used. As I hold the crude nail in my hands I am saddened to realise that even today innocent people can be persecuted and killed. It reminds me that we must keep striving to make the world a better place however long it takes. Giving up on it is not an option.
I hope everyone realises that when I pen these words I am really giving myself a pep talk. That is what the cross means to me.

Warrigal you are missing Smitty's point: they could of used the electric chair , if invented, to murder Christ. The electric chair would of been the symbol for Christianity.

I think the fish symbol would have become the enduring symbol since an electric chair would be very hard to replicate as a motif.

This symbol is made up of two Greek letters superimposed - chi and rho - which are the first two letters in the Greek spelling of Jesus. It is related to the fish symbol in that the first two letters of fish in Greek are also chi and rho. Apparently Constantine liked the chi/rho symbol as an alternate to the plain Roman cross. The cross or crucifix, the fish and the chi/rho symbol are all common symbols in the catholic church. Protestants tend to stick with a Roman or sometimes Celtic cross.
