Do you take advantage of perks that are available due to your status? I mean the discounts and stuff that merchants and others offer?
I never have, up until recently. The Missus signed me up for Lowe's 10% discount. My drivers license is due this month and NY has a provision that your status can appear on your license. I don't know that any benefit is associated with the mark, but I think I may go for it. It is possible that some day it may get me out of a ticket.
I see where starting Veterans Day 2017 that all honorably discharged veterans can shop the online exchange. I don't see any great savings there but the purchases are tax free.
My son in law is big on this, standing in line for the free meals some restaurants give out on Nov. 11th, he even asks if a discount is available where ever he goes. Seems a bit pitiful to me but-
I have never considered myself a true Vet as I have never seen combat. I always figure to let the benefits go to someone who truly earned them.
However I am rapidly approaching my 7th decade, looking around I have come to realize that I am some special kind of stupid in that I did a full four years in the Marines and allowed them to discharge me without assigning some compensable disability.

Well, we don't really. My husband is a disabled veteran who did see combat and is nearing 70 also.
The only advantage we take is a pass into state parks here in WI if he is with me. There are certain places that will give him a discount depending on the people working there. One of them is Culver's Restaurant. They give him either a senior discount or a veteran discount. He still recalls the scorn he received when coming home and really would rather not deal with it.

I went ahead and got the 10% Lowes discount card. And I got the little thing that says "veteran" on my license. Being an introvert, I don't like crowds so I'm not going to stand in line at Golden Corral for a free feed. I also bought four years of credit towards my retirement with the State of Florida. It cost me a little over $6,000 bucks but I figure it will be worth about $30,000 in additional benefits if I live another 10 years. Since I've already been retired for 10 I figure even if I drop dead before I make my next keystroke, I'll leave the table a winner. I used my GI Bill to get a Masters Degree after I got out. Bought my first house with a VA loan which saved me having to pay PMI because I didn't have squat for a down payment. I also gamed the system by taking courses at a junior college that I didn't need but I said I did and used up most of what I had left of the GI bill. This was back in the late 70's when tuition and books came to a lot less than what the GI bill payed me, so it was kinda like having a part time job. I have also left instructions for my oldest son to make sure he gets down to the post office and gets that Flag that I am entitled to when I croak. I'm not much of a Flag person but I want it anyway.

I was supposed to get four years of college on the GI bill, but the checks didn't come in for over two months. I was having to work from ten at night till 6am at McDonalds as the maintenance man, cleaning. Then my first class started at 9am....didn't get out of my last class until 2pm. Drive 40 minutes to my moms house, sleep from three o'clock till 9pm and go back to work....no time for study. Fell behind in my classes, so I quit. A year later I started going to hair styling school. 120 women, and only two other guys. After a year, I got my licence.

Even though I was owned by Uncle Sam for 8 years I don't have enough time to be considered a Veteran as I was in the Army Reserves and after just 2 years my file sat in St Louis and only had to do yearly physicals. Long story. But I do have my Honorary Discharge, And DD form 214. 1985-1993

Every vet is guaranteed a free funeral....I'm getting cremated and sprinkled over a mountain top in south New Mexico....at least my wife says she'll do it...I sure hope I go before her. I don't think anyone else cares enough to make sure I get sprinkled. My sister might sprinkle me in the woods somewhere. But around here, there's too many dead Civil War ghosts roaming these woods. If I would have died before I met Beth, I'd probably be in a landfill.
Tibetan Buddhists take their dead out to a flat rock and let the buzzards pick the bones clean. Regeneration.

Do you have any information on it? I don't want to miss out on anything. I want the cheapest funeral I can get. Free sounds good! I understand about the cremation and sprinkle thing. I left left instructions for my ashes to be sprinkled over the Gulf of Mexico. I want to feed the baitfish. I'm envisioning something like this:

Thanks! I don't think many veterans know about this.
