We've been plagued the past week or so with nuisance calls. We don't answer anytime a number is not recognized as someone we know. The calls just keep coming. Early on, they were spoofing local numbers. We answered a couple and were immediately connected to a barely-English speaking person trying to scam us. So... we quit answering. Yesterday, the same number with an Akron, Ohio area code kept calling over and over. After about the eighth call from that number, I finally did answer. It was someone with very broken English saying he was with Microsoft wanting to make over-the-phone adjustments to our computer. I blew up. Said some unkind words and he hung up. 15 minutes later, the same number came up. I answered again and this time it was a female caller... still broken English... trying the same Microsoft scam. When I began my tirade, she hung up. My wife has restricted me from answering any more phone calls!!!! (I did not use one swear word. I simply, in a very loud and stern voice, insulted their lack of communication skills and suggested they were about the filthiest kind of criminals, preying on the unsuspecting in our own homes. I may have also made a reference to the geographical region which I assumed they called from.
We have our land-line number on the 'do-not-call' list. If you threaten to report them, they just hang up. Most of the numbers they call from are spoofed and there is no way to trace them. Has anyone else had this issue? How do you put a stop to it?

That doesn't work. So now, I just hang up. That's on our land line. My cell phone is a basic $10 burner flip phone that I got at Wally World. It has a feature where you can block all calls except those from people on your contacts list. That works. Why in the hell can't we have land line phones that will do that? Probably because of the damned telemarketer lobby.

I get calls from all over the place... I check scamcaller online to see if the numbers have complaints, and sure enough they do.. Funny thing ( meaning odd thing ) sometimes I get calls that come up as a town in NH but the area code is not NH. As far as I know, there is no way to stop scam calls as they use all kinds of numbers.

They are a pain in the butt, that's for sure. I now let everything go to voice mail. Luckily, none of them leave a message.
I use to have fun with them...tell them "to please hold for the next available representative" then hang up, or "I no speak English" then hang up. Once, a man asked me if I was "So and So"...I told him "honey, I can be anybody you want me to be." He hung up! lol
Unless you have some type of call blocking on your line, they'll keep calling. Even then, that doesn't work well because they continue to use all different numbers to call from.

I said "That sounds interesting, tell me more". Then I put the phone down and walked away.

I just don't answer if I don't know who it is.

I regularly get those calls from some heavily-accented person (presumably calling from India) claiming to be from Microsoft and wanting to fix a problem with my computer. I tell them that I don't own a computer. That usually ends it, until the next time, lol.
I often get recorded calls saying it's my last notice to reduce the interest on my credit card(s). It says to push 1 to speak to a representative. I just hang up.

The Microsoft ones try to convince you that your computer is infected with viruses and that you need them to fix it. And it's always a dude with a really thick accent. The credit card ones always start off with a sentence or two designed to make you think they are from your credit card company calling you about some problem.

I have mentioned this elsewhere, but have found a service called NoMoRoBo to be very effective. Now, it's just for phones here in the US. But if you have a phone system that works over the internet (as many now do), this free service essentially intercepts calls as they come in and in a split second their system can determine whether the call was dialed via computer. Scammers and telemarketers use computers to speed their dialing. If the call is generated by a computer, the phone rings once then hangs up. The caller has a message on their end that basically tells them their call has been blocked. Now, if they're really determined they can manually dial, but I'd estimate that some days this system blocks about 5-7 calls. I have phone service through Comcast/Xfinity. Setup was less than five minutes and very simple. The service allows through calls from legitimate services such as emergency calls from our local police.
