Brother in law died last week. I am an evil bast*rd because I hated the son of a b*tch. He had some kind of mental illness. He was paranoid, combative, and reclusive with serious drug and alcohol problems.
30 years ago in one of his drunken rages he forced his mother out of the house on a mid winter night. She suffered a heart attack and died never returning home.
His oldest sibling was executer of the estate. He barricaded himself in the home preventing the estate from being probated. In court he advanced the argument that as his sisters had been "given" away at their weddings, he was the only legitimate heir. When the executrix finally gained access most things of value were missing.
He remained estranged from the family, except for one sister for the last thirty years.
Last Tuesday I got a phone call from his landlord,(how he got my info I,ll never know.) So my wife and I get into the car and hike 40 miles over to his place. Here is this poor stupid dead son of a b*tch laying on his kitchen floor. I call the police, about eight of them show up and mill around aimlessly for an hour or so. Cops finally decide its not suspicious and most of them leave. My wife grabs a blanket to cover him with and the cop says no. Not until the coroner gets there. So here is this guy in his underwear on the kitchen floor for another two hours before the coroner shows up.
Well the guy is destitute,so family being family we all start scraping to get enough to gether to dispose of his a$$.
Go into his room,OMG, turns out that this guy is an hoarder. Bag after bag or junk, bed sofa and chair infested with bed bugs.
Going thru his stuff we find this destitute guy has 2200 dollars in cash. He also has keys to three storage lockers, we start working on them. A full 40 yard dumpster and a 30 yard dumpster. Case upon case upon case of protein drinks from the VA. Two large black garbage bags of drugs prescribed by the VA but never used. Heating pads, latex gloves, etc, etc, what a waste..We also found a good size collection of silver coins that had gone missing from the parents house.
The amazing thing was we found another 43,695 dollars in cash. Freakin Mental Illness. We need to go back to supervised or restricted living.
