The U.S. economy expanded at a 3.3% annualized pace in the final quarter of 2023, the Commerce Department said on Thursday.
Why it matters: It's much stronger growth than economists expected and caps a year of economic resilience as the nation avoided a projected recession.
The economy moderated in the September-December period compared to the previous quarter's 4.9% growth, which got a notable boost from companies building up inventories.
The big picture: Economic growth has been underpinned by booming consumer spending that continued even as prices for many items remain steep and interest rates rose.

The economy is doing great. Yet, all we hear is doom and gloom. Why aren't the various news media sources shouting this from the rooftops??
Wife went to a part yesterday afternoon. An old friend who had moved to the east coast was back in town for a visit. There were about 20 ladies our age who attended. She said it was disheartening to hear the doom and gloom re the economy. Said a couple of the ladies were talking about pulling everything out of banks because we were going to see the biggest stock market crash in history yet this year. They kept saying Biden needed to do more to cut costs and quit trying to give away all the government's money to Ukraine, immigrants and those who won't work and support themselves. Just narrative straight from watching too much Fox News. She was really down when she returned home. Cannot understand how educated people can so easily be brought in line with the scare tactics totally out there to deny the positives and accentuate the negatives.

It’s so much easier to sell fear!!
The media loves the sensational, more than the truth.
The Media ex-perts have had the US going to have, a grand recession, for years now!
After the pandemic, the economy under trump was very bad, most Republicans thought it was good,
a few months after, Biden was in office, the same economy, most republicans, thought was now bad???
Rent near most Big Cities is real bad. Not enough housing!
Real wages are up!
Much of the media, spins the news in favor of the powerful, they work for. You look closely at the wording, you will see it is not accurate, it is true, but slanted to the rich and powerful, point of view.
Unions have done well, but you will hear little about it.

Cannot understand how educated people can so easily be brought in line with the scare tactics totally out there to deny the positives and accentuate the negatives. This phenomena is an even bigger downer than the prospect of having Trump in the WH again. Republicans in office used to be just a delay in the conduct of the nation's business, now it's a Fn cult / social disease with no cure in sight.

Yep! They act more like a bunch of thugs instead of a political party. If I were a Republican I'd be embarrassed and angry by the way they behave.
School yard bullies always looking for a fight or a distraction so voters don't notice how little they have done or even plan to do for the country.
Not surprised though. They did put a rich talk show person in the White House, whose daddy was friends with nazis. I don't expect much from them.
