For those who don't know, my husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer almost 2 years ago. We took the "active surveillance" approach with PSA and MD exam every 3 months.. until he had an MRI and it appeared the cancer had progressed within the prostate. On April 4th he underwent a radical prostatectomy. He saw the MD yesterday and a PSA level was drawn. Just now got a call from the office... PSA IS UNDECTABLE!!!! Cancer is GONE!! He will still have to be monitored for the rest of his life, but no radiation or chemo.. We are blessed! and so relieved!

We were fortunate to have a Primary care MD who PUSHED us to see a Urologist. We had been watching Mike's PSA slowly rise over several years.. 3.0... 4.5.....6.0.. Mike relied on "Dr.Google" to believe that it was normal for a man in his 60's. I was lucky to be working in a hospital and many of the Docs I knew recommended a specific urology group.. It's one of the largest in this area and very well respected.. At first they took a conservative approach thinking that the PSA rise could be do to prostatitis..so he was treated with antibiotics for several weeks.. PSA rechecked and it was 8.0!! It was at that point that he agreed to have a prostate biopsy ( a very uncomfortable procedure) and yes.. the diagnosis of adenocarcinoma was confirmed.
Fortunately, it was a lower grade cancer.. Gleason score 6...and the specimen was sent for genetic testing which confirmed it to be a low aggression lesion. So the cancer was watched for over a year.. PSA every 3 months.. BUT.. as time went on.. there began to be difficulty in urination and the prostate was growing.. They wanted to do another biopsy.. but mike wanted to try a new type of MRI designed especially for the prostate.. This showed another lesion in the anterior lobe which had a high suspicion for a more aggressive higher grade cancer. It was at that point we decided on surgery. A radical prostatectomy using the Da VInci robotic surgical system.. which is less invasive.
The pathology report did indeed show a higher grade cancer a Gleason 7.. however it was contained to the prostate and had not spread. bone scans, CT scans, all negative.. margins negative. NOW his PSA is undetectable. Praise God.
I type this for the benefit of any man reading to understand how a PSA and followup can save your life.. and for any woman who's man is putting off having a PSA or ignoring a PSA increase.. That is a foolish thing to do.
