I have often wondered why voters would support a candidate or political party who's platform and policies undermine those voter's well-being. This book explores the reasons for this rational disconnect.
Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment Is Killing America's Heartland is a 2019 non-fiction book written by Jonathan M. Metzl, a Nashville, Tennessee Vanderbilt University professor of sociology and psychiatry, based on research undertaken in Missouri, Tennessee and Kansas from 2013 to 2018.
In his 2019 non-fiction book, which is based on several years of research undertaken in the 2010s in the South and Midwest states—Missouri, Tennessee and Kansas, physician and psychiatrist Jonathan Metzl reveals the unintended public health consequences of some right-wing backlash politics related to taxes, gun control, social safety nets, and healthcare on vulnerable white voters they had promised to help.[5] Through "field interviews, research and public-health data" gathered over the years of travel to these states, Metzl found that some vulnerable white Americans would rather die than betray their political views that have become enmeshed with their own sense of white identity.

There IS a significant movement in the U.S. to bring "whiteness" back to power... and ONLY "whiteness". Republicans currently serving in Congress have openly stated they fear Caucasians will become a minority in both positions of power and in the general population. This is why "Christians"... evangelicals... would rather see morally bankrupt criminals and sexual abusers in Congress and the Presidency than someone of color who is actually more "Christian" they they are.
Ingram, Carlson, and Hannity are leading the charge for white supremacy from the television screens. Numerous MAGA talk show hosts on radio tell the evils of the continued rise of nonwhites in power. They despised Obama, not for his policies, but for his color. They despise Harris, not for the job she is doing as VP, but for her color.
Herschel Walker?? They will push for an unqualified, uneducated philanderer to be elected... even though black... knowing he is a vote, but doesn't have the intelligence to do them damage. It's sickening, how patriotism, Constitution, and just plain morality is shoved aside for money and power. But, that's today's GOP and a growing cult of white supremacists.

Could it be they are afraid Black people in power will treat Whites the same way some White people treated Black people? Some Whites still treat Black people and others as inferior.
Payback is a b*tch even if it's all in your mind. They might say they are willing to die for their ridiculous cause, but I never listen to what people say. I watch what they do and I'm still watching.
What the Hell are these white people so afraid of? Equality? Or, are they afraid of being treated the same way they treat others? Do they honestly think they are a superior race because of their skin color?
Integrity, fairness, wisdom, and kindness doesn't belong to one race. Far from it.

That is what they are afraid of, and losing the ability to treat others as inferior, in order to pump up their own delusional egos.

It's pathetic and sad. Oh, and very annoying. These beings need to get a life. A real life. Focused on productive and helpful ideas to make the world livable for all beings...even people who don't think like, talk like, worship like, look like, or love like they do.
I believe they can turn their fear into hope, their rage into calm, their anger into acceptance, if they choose to do so. It's easier to be weak and gun down strangers instead of strong and look at your own weakness and faults and begin to make changes in your own life.

These attitudes and fears are entrenched into society, since even before the Civil War. Like child abuse and sexual abuse, these ways of thinking are handed down from one generation to the next.

This is true. Sad, but true.

White skinned men did try to wipe out Native Americans, steal their land, rape their women, and girls. Maybe they are afraid when they become the minority, and I believe they will, they will be treated the same way.
What goes around comes around!
Some White men say they would rather die than betray their political views? Really? I have my doubts about that. It sounds very patriotic but I'd have to see it to believe it.

Nothing can make me betray my political views - nothing, but I will lie to save my life. If they don't believe my lie, my political views will be firmly intact should they fire that bullet into my head at point blank range. I would rather die than fire on my fellow Americans, regardless of orders from Nazis like Trump or DeSantis...but then...I'm fairly old. I've lived my life.
