Birthday last week. At this age, it's just another day. The daughters asked what I wanted for my birthday. I told them "... another Scrabble tournament..." Each winter we try to get both girls here at the same time for a day... a whole day... of Scrabble. We have "Super Scrabble". That is a larger board and more tiles than the original game. Takes about 2 1/2 hours to play a game. Really gets competitive.
I never thought more about it. This morning, it was cold and I didn't head to the golf course. About 9:00 who walks in the door but both daughters, one grandson and one granddaughter. The daughters said they were here to take me on in Scrabble! Wow! What a surprise!!
Got the first game started. I was taking the girls to the cleaners. About 11:00 a.m., they told me to get outta my sweats and into some clothes because we were going out for lunch. Thought they were just going to take us to one of the local restaurants. No!! We headed to a town about 20 miles to our west. Didn't make sense. Pulled into an old diner I frequented many years ago. It was packed due to Veterans Day. But, they were able to get us a table after a very short wait.
I often "complain" to my wife that she won't fix me liver & onions. Well, guess what this diner has on the menu every other Friday. Yep!! Liver & onions!!! Large portion of liver & onions, mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls, desert, and tea or coffee... $8.00!!!!! The special was either liver & onion or roast beef with all the same trimmings for $8.00. The girls and wife had the roast beef while I enjoyed my liver & onions. Bet it's been 40 or more years since I last had liver & onions!!!
After lunch back home and another game of Scrabble. What a wonderful day!!! Total surprise. The wife and girls had it all planned out and kept it quiet.
This evening, we were joined by the granddaughter's boyfriend and our son-in-law for supper. I'm exhausted! Didn't even have time for my afternoon nap!!! The one daughter lives about 2 hours east of us. Hope she gets home safely without hitting a deer. It's that time of year when the rut season begins and we see lots of vehicle deer accidents. Our state will run around 15,000 deer/vehicle accidents each year.
