Social Security is NOT a government handout. It's our money!
I started working when I was 17. It was a very long time ago. Lol. I remember looking at my first paycheck and wondering why the amount was not what I was told I'd be earning. What's this social security and other things taken out of my paycheck?
That was money put away for me so I'd have a secure retirement. Retirement? I was 17! Who is thinking about that at 17?
I'm 77 now. That is my money that was taken out of my paycheck and put away for me since I was a teenager.
It is not a handout. It is my money that I never even saw because a promise was made that if it's taken out of my check I will get it back when I'm retired.
Not a handout! More like a broken promise or a robbery.
It's our money!

Let's say I went to the bank to take some money out of my account. Money that I put in that account. Let's say the bank teller tells me she can't give me the money because it's in their bank and therefore it's their money. Excuse me?
Social Security was taken out of my very first paycheck and every one after. MY paycheck, my money.
BTW, nobody asked me if I wanted SS taken out of my check. It was done so I'd have a secure future. The future is now and suddenly it's not my money. It's a handout? Yes, it is. It's a handout from me to me!

I agree with you 100% but let me play devil's advocate. The fact is, you put in half of what was put in. Your employer(s) put in the other half. Therein lies the rub. Half of what was contributed to SS on your behalf came from wealthy people who pay politicians to lie, cheat, and steal to cut their business expenses so they can have more money for themselves. Paying for half of your SS is a business expense just like your wages, which is why people with deep pockets who run businesses want to eliminate SS. It should not come as a surprise. Another way to look at SS is "earned income." Yes, it is forced upon employers and employees alike, but it's actually part of our wages. As employees, we're forced to contribute a percentage of our wages to SS, and employers are forced to pay us a little more (6.2%) in the form of a withholding tax. If your paycheck is $1,000, withholding SS will reduce it to $938, but because your employer also has to pay 6.2%, your wages are actually $1,062 so it's a wash for employees...but it's an added expense for employers. On the plus side, messing with OUR money is a sure way to lose votes, as I hope my senator, Ron Johnson finds out. He's said he's looking at ways to eliminate SS. Of course, he is. He's one of those wealthy people who will lie, cheat, and steal to cut business expenses. Then he'll make the claim that he cut taxes.

They are promising us a COLA raise, matching the inflation numbers. Won't help us if it only matches how much our costs to eat, etc. have increased. Also, sounds like Medicare will go up so that will take a bite out of the COLA increase.
