I did my Wellness exam. I feel I am in pretty good health for a 65 year old. I have done CrossFit for 3 and half years and the last year did it at home but went back to the gym because the coach had the building open on both ends.
That changed when Covid starting raging in our area. I realize some of my CF friends were under some sort of spell thinking because they work out, they were immune. --Meaning they wouldn't vaccinate because they work out so much---
Anyway a Bone Density Scan showed this old young lady as having osteoporosis in both hips and a lumbar spine with Severe Osteoporosis to the measure of T -4.
T -2.5 is bad and that is one hip. Huh.
My doctor called sort of surprised when she got the results.
Our family has had hormonal breast cancer so after 'Mental' Pause, I was not treated with Estrogen. I am a very small person too.
The doctor ordered x rays of the lumbar, hips, thorax. Only a tiny bit of arthritis showed up and no compression fractures. --Thank goodness!--
The good news? I all the intensive tests with blood work and other labs show me as normal and healthy.
There is a med I will start taking if I can tolerate it which may be the generic Fosomax. I told my doctor I wanted to be evaluated by Physical Therapy and find out what exercises are safe for me.
What exercises are good for maintaining the lower back muscles to protect my spine. And specific balance and strength work.
I imagine that box jumps, burpees, and some of the lifts I've done all summer might not be good choices.
Dang. I am no longer superwoman.
I do feel good though and will continue my hiking every day and working out but working out smarter.
What does the future hold for severe osteoporosis? I'm not exactly sure.
