How do you get a sick cat to eat? I've tried water vs no water on her food, preparing "people" food for her, but she won't eat. As she has a cold, I've been trying to keep her eyes & nose as clear as possible so she can heal and so she can smell food, but the advice of exposing her to steam is complicated as I don't think she should get wet and she loves jumping into the shower after I've used it.
The local vet is useless, so I'm hoping someone here will have advice.

How long has she been this way? You only feed dry cat food?
Sounds like she may have an upper respiratory tract infection aka cat cold. After 4 days, she should be treated by a vet as a persisting cold that does not get treated properly may develop into pneumonia.
A humidifier may help to add moisture to the air, instead of steam.
To try to get her to eat, you can try smearing a tiny amount of food on her front paw, like tuna pate or chicken baby food. Be careful with trying to force water down her throat so it doesn't accidently get into her lungs.
Cats cannot go without food and water for a long time. Their bodies thrive on protein. Without it, they will have kidney failure.
Try finding a different vet if you aren't happy with the one you took her to if it's been longer than 4 days and she's not get better.
