A couple weeks ago, my wife said she needed a new 12" skillet. The one she was using had seen its day and it was time to be replaced. She wanted another 12" skillet so the nice lid to the current one would work on the new skillet. Off to Bed, Bath & Beyond we went. After perusing ALL the skillets, she finally settled on her new 12" fry pan. With her new prized possession in hand, back home we went. Got home and she said it wouldn't work. The 12" lid from her old skillet wouldn't fit her new one. I didn't even look at it, assuming some difference in manufactures' designs. A few days later, she returned the skillet to BB&B. About a week ago, she slipped over to Marshall's and picked up another 12" skillet. When I returned home, that day, she was beside herself. The lid wouldn't fit the skillet from Marshall's either! This time, I slipped a tape measure out of a drawer and measured the lid. "Hon, your lid is 10" in diameter not 12!" She replied, "That can't be! I know my old one was a 12" skillet!" Well, if the old one was 12" in diameter the edges must have been tapered in so the top was only 10"!!!! Two days ago, she took the 12" back to Marshall's and picked up a 10" skillet. The lid fits like a glove. She still can't figure out why the lid fit her old 12" and, now, only fits a 10". She used the new skillet a short while ago to cook me some pancakes. Jokingly, she did say "I sure like my new 12" skillet that was mislabeled as a 10"!" It's been so much fun being married for 55 years to a blonde!!!!

Oh my! I think that I would of bought a new frying pan with a lid. Nkat We were both raised on small farms. During our 55 years of marriage, we both have maintained the idea of living frugally. We will spend more money and time researching a purchase than had we just gone out and bought the durn thing. Yes, it would have made more sense to just get a skillet/lid combo and be done with it. Nope! She liked that lid and was bound and determined to not spend the extra dollars for a new one. I get frustrated at the things she saves and reuses that I think need to just be tossed. Now, don't say a thing about my "stuff" that I can't bring myself to toss because I might use that rusty nail sometime in the next 20 years!!! We are not "hoarders". Just have never been comfortable with "impulse" buying. Our home is not large. It has served us well for the 22 years we've lived here. Yet, we have recently talked about downsizing into something with lawn maintenance, snow removal, etc. To do that, I might have to get rid of some of the 52 dozen golf balls I have in egg cartons in my golf shop. 52 dozen! All pristine balls found on the golf course that other folks have lost. Haven't bought a golf ball in 25 years!!! I will NEVER lose/need/play a third of those 52 dozen if I am still playing golf at 90! Still, maybe I will need them so gotta keep 'em! We just made a trip this week to the "Fit Closet" and a local church charity shop with clothes, shoes, some old cooking utensils, etc. "Fit Closet" is part of our local school district. They take donations of clothes, toiletries, etc. for families of kids who need a little assistance. Trying to thin things out... some. But, can't get rid of that... 12"...skillet lid!!! Life is good!

I shop alone since he is still working. I buy the new pan and give the old pan to my dh to scrap. He is a carpenter/builder and he scraps. The pan would still be sitting in the garage because scrap prices were down. Okey He is an only child raised by older parents. When he outgrew his tennis shoes, they would cut off the toes so he could wear them in the summer. I never had much growing up but I did have new tennis shoes and sandals also. They were not the prices of these shoes designed by athletes. I did save some lids from old frying pans cause they fit my new pan! Lol He uses everything until it falls apart. His wallet is atrocious. He has a new wallet but oh no. I keep telling him that you can not take it with you. nkat

Our generation had a little different rearing than most today. We had 'store bought' jeans and shoes. Mom made almost all our shirts. Got laughed at at school more than once, since she wasn't a professional seamstress. Today, my "summer shoes" have more than one hole worn through the sides or toe. They are comfortable and still work. Wife has asked, numerous times, are you really going to wear those outside the house? Well, she used to ask that. Doesn't even bother anymore. Knows I will wear them until they totally fall apart.

Just found this thread and read through it. Too funny about the lid not fitting the pan. A year and a half ago, a couple days before Easter, my stove died. I had to hurry and get a new one. Well, I bought a modern glass top stove. Now, I have all types of cookware with lids, but some of it will not work on this new stove. Revere with the copper bottom is a no go for sitting level to cook anything in, on this stove. Certain non stick pans I have, act the same way. Frustrated, I decided 3 months ago, to invest in a new cookware set that would actually work where I could enjoy cooking again. I purchased a set of Carote 10 pcs. granite cookware set. Lids also fit the skillets. We LOVE them!!! Nothing sticks, cook evenly and easy clean up. Packed up what no longer works on this new stove and took them to Goodwill. (I'm not one to hold onto things if all I do is just store them.) The stove, meh...I miss my old element burner stove. Hubby enjoys cooking...he likes the new stove and the cookware that doesn't stick. I'm happy...he's doing more cooking than me.

My frying pans are nonstick. I really use a cast iron Dutch Oven covered in aluminum from QVC, once I learned how much that retains heat and to cook on simmer. Lol nkat. That is a nice set of cookware.

Hubby enjoys cooking...he likes the new stove and the cookware that doesn't stick. I'm happy...he's doing more cooking than me. A few months ago we purchased all new kitchen appliances... fridge, dishwasher, and stove. The stove is "glass top" vs. the old element type we have always had. So far, I haven't heard any complaints for the "Chief Cook & Bottlewasher". I'm almost scared to use it, fearful I'll break it. Getting more comfortable, though, on the occasions I do toss together an omelet or a grilled cheese sandwich. The things I am hearing from wifey have to do with storage. Our old stove had a large drawer in the bottom for pots and pans. The new stove has a much smaller drawer and larger oven. Also, the new fridge does not have adjustable shelves. So, the tall things have to go on the top shelf. I certainly don't see any issue with this, but it seems to bug the lady of the house. As long as my Keurig works and the microwave functions... I could exist for the rest of my days!!! :>)

It's nice to get new things. New things make me feel good. We deserve brand new things. Enjoy them because you deserve new things too! ;)
