I've been presented over and over by some on social media that I MUST do the math and COVID-19 is nothing to fear at all!
By golly in my State ONLY 12% of people aged 70-79 die if they get it. Only 4% of people are dying in my age group.
So in my discussion of rebuttal, I said that 12% of my husband's age group would be like taking 10 cousins from this age group and putting them in a room. Then pick 1.2 people to knock off and die. Wait.
That is not how it works!
But that is how the math does work.
Bed availability. 77% of our hospital beds are unavailable. However, in my area the numbers are better for right now.
Of course Math doesn't tell the whole story. And people use statistics in a warped way to show their point. Exactly as I did to get across my point which may be totally flawed.
Our state statistics do not include those specific high risk people. When a VA doctor calls your house and says not to worry about some cancer tests and going to bone scans...put them off for a FEW months because he didn't want my husband to go to their medical center [which is dealing with COVID-19 patients]...there is a reason.
And it isn't fake. It is real. But, there you go. I just had to do a bit of venting.

That really shows how scary this pandemic is.

Update. The VA doctors have asked that my husband put off appts until after July 4th. They are handling veterans with COVID-19, but do stress that we can do telehealth and telehealth mental health calls. Bone scans were postponed until the end of May with a re-assessment of cases.
This VA is not over run with cases but since veterans of his age are very high risk, they want to try and keep them safe.
Yet I still have people telling me this is a hoax! LOL. Time to end being friends with them?

For 40 years, in construction and engineering, I lived and died by math. A sixteenth of an inch could make the difference between a pipe leaking or not. 0.1 mg/litre could make the difference whether water was safe to drink... or not.
With people... with the lives of my family, friends, myself... I understand data engineering in an attempt to find trends. We use math in an attempt to define at-risk groups. At-risk for certain health trends. At-risk for certain crime trends. At-risk for certain social trends. But when they tell me my family needs to place themselves in the midst of a pandemic because their age group or race or financial standing is "less likely" to die... I shudder.
I liked the example of when they were saying "only" 2% of those contracting COVID-19 would die so why worry. Give them 100 Skittles and tell them 98 are harmless and two are poison. Now... eat 98 of them because "only" two will kill you!
