Emergency Board Meeting at our golf course yesterday afternoon. Would we be able to stay open? Or, will we be shut down. Good meeting. County Health Department gave us an email saying we would NOT be closed, even if the county went to a "stay at home" order. Courses in the KC area were shut down for a couple weeks and have been allowed to reopen. Most golf courses in our immediate area... in counties that have gone to 'stay at home' orders... are staying open. The email from our County Health Department pretty much mirrors what other counties are requiring.
1. Social distancing. No more than one person per golf cart.
2. All carts disinfected after each use.
3. No persons inside clubhouse/snack bar. Must use pass through window for transactions.
4. Flagsticks must be left in holes so no cross contamination... or removed.
5. Bunker rakes removed from sand bunkers.
6. Ball washers and any other items that could cause cross contamination removed from the courses.
7. Minimum 15 minutes between tee times so separate groups remain distanced apart.
We have either have been doing... or started after last night's meeting..
8. Putting bleach in the large driving range ball washer so range balls are disinfected.
9 Removed all outside tables so folks cannot gather around them. We removed all but 8 outside chairs. Those chairs have 7 foot lengths of conduit tying one to another so they cannot be moved closer together.
10. All benches on tee boxes removed.
11. Staff disinfecting mowers and all power equipment after each use.
12. All driving range ball buckets sprayed with disinfectant after each use.
13. Large signs being made to post warning people to obey minimum six foot distancing.
14. Large pavilion with picnic tables roped off and closed.
And... I may have missed a few things. As you can see, we have searched high and low to be proactive. Our staff and Board are working hard to provide the safest possible environment for folks to enjoy outside activities.
County just to the west of us shut down yesterday. Their Chief of Police and County Sheriff appeared before the County Health Officer. Said that in the short time since many businesses and the schools shut down incidences of domestic violence have skyrocketed. They both asked that lakes, golf courses, walking trails, etc. be left open to allow folks the opportunity to not feel "trapped" inside their homes. That health officer agreed and seems to be the take most are following in leaving courses open.
Our County Health Officer holds a briefing every afternoon. Yesterday, she said our county would probably be locked down today, Friday, or over the weekend. We are "Midwest" enough, that we don't have a single positive case yet. Had one from the county to our east who was hospitalized here. He has recovered enough to be sent home. One resident had traveled to the East Coast. She flew back into Kansas City and had symptoms hit during the flight. Started back towards home, but stopped at a Topeka hospital and is admitted there. So, never did re-enter our area. A soldier stationed at the military installation had been on TDY in California. Came down, there, and was flown to the Army hospital to our west. Again, he never entered or had contact with anyone from our town.
I did go out and play this morning. First time since last weekend. Not going to make it a daily excursion as I used to. Very satisfied how everyone was so cognizant of the social distancing. On the course, we were careful not to pick up another player's clubs or balls. (We usually do out of common courtesy.) I had some minor plumbing work to do so only made the single trip out to kill two birds with one stone.
