The US needs universal healthcare like every other developed country in the world! No drug pushing doctors in those. And no outrageous drug costs - or any cost at all in some countries. (yes, yes, other than our taxes).

Well Rebecca, she is in the pharma world of drugs. To restate... Many doctors have tons of pharm-rep information... calendars... knickknacks etc in their offices... my doctor's is bare outside of some outstanding naval photos!! ... Yes.... she is a typical physician but as a Naval doc... she isn't tied into promotions from Pharm companies.... Now it is true that she isn't someone who is reliant on alternative medicines but I will say she is very open for discussion on many things.... Strictly speaking, it is difficult to find a military physician who totally embraces alternative medicine.... I like my doc... I think she is open minded on a lot of issues.... and that makes her flexible which I think is the next best thing......

The relationship between doctor and patient is a partnership - not parent child one. The patient needs to take some responsibility for the decisions being made. Just because an MD Rx's a drug doesn't mean you have to take it without question. Patients need to be informed and take an active part in the decision making process. Yes, there are some doctors who are money grubbers who will take advantage of any situation that will profit them, but I believe they are in the minority. Many patients just do not want to do those things that will alleviate, diminish or eliminate their illness - or threatened illness - exercise, diet adjustments life style changes; they just want a quick and easy pill. I have slightly elevated cholesterol. My doctor suggested I take a Statin. I have read some concerning things about that class of drugs - especially for women. I told him I'd prefer to try other means of lowering it first. I sent away for a test kit to test my own cholesterol and altered my diet - I was already exercising (my TeakwonDo) After a time it came down as did my triglycerides, etc. The top cholesterol level that was acceptable used to be 240. It was fairly recently lowered to 200 - coincidental with the introduction of Statins. (nurses tend to fall into 2 main groups in relation to Rx's - either those who take a pill for everything or those who resist them for almost everything - I tend to fall in the latter group) Even elderly patients (I'm 82) need to be informed if they are capable - if not they need a trusted family member or caretaker to be informed and able to make these informed decisions. Putting complete and unquestioning faith in anyone is not wise. Ultimately we are all responsible for our health decisions.

dragonlady:: And your cholesterol is probably not a problem at all. There is a lot of info out there to read on the Cholesterol Myth. Our medical world is so drug and sickness geared and thank goodness for all the alternative info we can search out or the medical world would have us drugged to the 9's......Not this lady and I'm 81. www.ravnskov.nu/cholesterol/Our bodies need cholesterol and for sure our brains and I'm believing due to all the statins pushed on people starting so early, more dementia is showing up so early in people...cholesterol is many is going too low. Our brains need cholesterol.

Most of the body's organs get the cholesterol they need from the blood. Similarly, when the body breaks down cholesterol, its components return to the liver for reprocessing. Some of the statin drugs' benefits depend on their ability to trick the liver into removing cholesterol from the blood. The brain has a higher cholesterol content than any other organ. In fact, about 25% of the body's cholesterol is found in this small organ, which accounts for less than 2% of the body's weight. Most of the cholesterol is in the myelin sheaths that surround the axons of nerve cells, protecting the cells and facilitating the speedy transmission of the electrical impulses that govern thought, movement, and sensation. The brain is highly dependent on cholesterol, but its cholesterol metabolism is unique. Because the blood-brain barrier prevents brain cells from taking up cholesterol from the blood, the brain must produce its own cholesterol. Like the liver, brain cells depend on HMG-CoA reductase to produce cholesterol. The brain's cholesterol is much more stable than the cholesterol in other organs, but when it breaks down, it is recycled into new cholesterol right in the brain.Because of the blood-brain barrier, changes in blood cholesterol levels are not necessarily reflected in the brain itself. In addition, the barrier keeps many chemicals, including medications as well as toxins, away from the brain. www.health.harvard.edu/newsletter_article/cholesterol-the-mind-and-the-brain

Best way to learn is from practicing herbalist or doctor Another good place to learn is traditional Chinese apothecary if any in your area... many roots you can buy without doctor order... much like OTC meds you can get at regular pharmacy Many medications however will need a doctor to order for you

Doctors and that whole industry of medicine. And there are plenty of money grabbers and uncaring people in this industry.
My daughter really got messed up on pharma drugs some yrs ago by a doctor who we've found later is a notorious "writer" in our town. Building his practice on unsuspecting customers...yes we are customers.
Along the way as my daughter got addicted to Vicodin and eventually lost her hearing and went to rehab for 13 months, we found that a CROOKED pharmacist was selling her bottles of vicodin under the table and $$$ into his pocket. He may have owned the pharmacy and got away with it all.
So MONEY can talk big time.
Addiction is alive and NOT WELL out there.

About 10 yrs NO Dental Visits
Thinking today how jazzed I am on no dental visits in about 10 yrs. Dentists are doctors, right??? Doctors for the mouth.
I've so cleaned up my refined sugar intake and it's paying off. I buy and eat small amounts of fruits and some yogurts for my sweet needs...no more cookies, breads, cakes, pies, etc etc etc...and it's working and I was not ready to do this over 10 yrs ago but as they say: When the Student is Ready, the Teacher will Appear....
Also, using Coconut Oil Toothpaste I don't find a need to get dental cleanings...I keep my teeth good with CO toothpaste.
And, of course, my antioxidants, keep my gums tip top condition.
I've even quit alcohol as truly no health benefits but sugar too.
My gift to me.

I guess when all is said and done about sugars and our health, one could put it on the rat poison par. Reflecting on my long life and plenty of sugar and carbs and I stopped at that a good 10 yrs ago, I've been gifted with arthritis, dental issues for years, and thankfully no diabetes and cancers. I pop my own corn and like a kettle type sweet/salty popcorn, and have been using a dash of stevia in my olive oil and love the outcome. Good good popcorn.

Yours is a special story and you were "put together" from your accident etc. I am my own doc for prevention for overall general health and at 81 I'm proof of my doctoring...no doctor has ever talked about antioxidants to strengthen the immune system, no they run for the needle and drugs for their vaccine world. There is a big difference in Prevention and helping one get better when in a sick and weakened condition. The damage I live with is from a major hip surgery and the complicaitons from it.
