My supermarket chain has started to deploy an autonomous, mobile robotic device called "Marty" that rolls over the floor looking for spills requiring clean-up which he then reports. The tower-like device as tall as a person will stop if his sensors detect a human in his path of travel, and he makes sounds as he advances to further warn people of his approach. When I had my first encounter with "Marty" I thought he was being remotely controlled as some kind of store promotion, but he is autonomous, probably moving in response to a store map programmed into him. While a long way from being C-3PO or another robot from the world of science fiction, this robotic device is a step towards the presence of robots in our environment. Like most of technology, robots are evolving quickly, and in ten years we might be amazed by what we'll see...

I just wonder if there would be room for such a thing in my supermarket's crowded aisles. I'd love to see one, though. Have you seen one yet, fyrefox?

Yes, my supermarket is large, and I see "Marty" every time I'm there. I sometimes walk around him, passing within two feet or so. The other day I saw the robot on the floor being worked on by a technician, his outer "skin" stripped off. A cashier told me that his programmed "map" of the store layout had failed him, and he was trying to leave the store! Wouldn't that have been something to have had this black, tower-like robot out in the parking lot or maybe beyond where people weren't familiar with him?

They should have let him escape.😸 Not seen them in a British supermarket.

One day no human will have to work. Of course humans will have to live under bridges and eat out of trash cans,,,,, all humans, not just the down trodden.

They use robotic carts to deliver pills in the hospitals here.
