I've played... do play a lot of golf. The Game is one of the few where you are responsible for calling penalties on yourself, counting ALL your strokes, and playing by the Rules of Golf. It's often been tagged as the "Gentleman's Game".
When Tiger Woods began to win it was good for the game. Lots of young people wanted to "be like Tiger" and took up the game of golf. Purses for tournaments went up due to a huge increase in television viewership. We saw a generation of Tour pros have to become athletes to compete... and they did.
Then we had "Skanksgiving". Wood's wife caught him cheating with a porn star and a Perkins waitress. She beat the windows in on his Escalade and sent him packing. Two children left to live in the shadow of a father known about as much for his cavorting as for his golf abilities. And, Woods career went in the tank with injuries. More and more porn stars became "notches" of his escapades. A professional skier lived with him for a while. Their nude photos of "sexcapades" hit the tabloids.
Just as with the POTUS, Woods retained a devoted fan club. His fans would take issue with even a mention of his lifestyle choices. Sweep it under the rug. He's the greatest golfer of all time. Who cares about what he does in his off time. Meanwhile it begins to appear as if golf is no better than professional football or basketball where a Wilt Chamberlain brags about his 1,000 sex partners. As long as an athlete can win at his/her sport, let's not worry about them being a role model. A game that has a century long tradition of integrity is tainted by a billionaire who traipses through women like he marches through golf courses.
We thought Woods was done. Had some really good role models as the "young guns". Gary Woodland. Jason Day. Young men who prided themselves in their families and in doing charity work for their communities. Then... today....
The Masters is the "greatest show on grass" in the game of golf. Tradition. History. Woods wins it today. The media is going wild. "Tiger's back!!" They're shouting it from the rooftops. Mouths are drooling. Commentators are wetting their pants with excitement. "Tiger's back!!" Yes, it was a good final round. Competitive. He did what he needed to do to get the win. Guess I should be applauding his ability to hold it together for four rounds and don another Green Jacket. But, I'm not. I am disappointed that such a morally bankrupt person is the face of golf. Just like I am so disappointed that such a morally bankrupt person is the current President of the United States. This morning, Trump tweeted his hopes that Woods would win The Masters. Trump got his wish. Maybe they will get together for a party and use their billions to hire a gaggle of hookers.
Rant over......
