All my bills are set up on auto pay....some are paid by my bank and some via credit card. I do get a monthly
statement by mail for some and emails statements for others, a few even offer discounts for the auto pay.

Uncle Sam locks takes back the SSI of the one who passed Interesting, I was not aware of that. Here's what AARP says about this issue:
My dad died on July 12'th 2013. When mom returned from the funeral and burial, even though it was still July, her bank account was locked. Not only was she dealing with grief, but Uncle Sam drove the knife deeper.

All of my bills are paid online, I use checks only when there's no alternative. Also, I didn't set up recurring payments and I don't pay fees for making my monthly bills via online payments, I prefer to make single payments instead of letting the companies take money directly out of my account unless I authorize it each time.
That's the way I am too.

I pay mainly online but do pay by check on some bills. My account with BOA gives me a free box of checks each year. That's more than enough for me. My electric bill, phone bill, cable bill and Humana bill are auto paid to a rewards cc each month that is paid online each month.

The bank we use for any checking provides checks free of charge. (We've had accounts with them since the early 80's.) My wife uses their on-line payment system to pay 98% of our bills. When we get a statement in the mail, she goes on-line and sets it up for payment on a certain date. The bank sends the check and do not charge us for that service. We have one or two auto-pays that come out each month. I doubt we write more than three or four paper checks/year.
We have accounts with two banks. Our larger checking/savings accounts are with one bank. The other we have our safety deposit box, a smaller savings account, and a small checking account. When I was on the road, we were fearful of having a debit cared hacked. I carried a card from that small account with one bank for all my fuel, restaurant, hotel transactions. Wife would check it daily and transfer money from the other bank if necessary. I also carried a card from one of the larger accounts in the other bank in case of emergency.
As we have retired, we continue that protocol. When we travel or even eat out here at home, we use the "road" card. That does not expose the larger account(s) to hackers.
