Is the full onset of dementia more a concern for family and friends than the person with the condition?

Doesn't it seem the heartache would be felt more by the family, as the patient may not realize he/she are actually devoid of their memory?

Have you ever sat and listened to a person reminisce about their past, who has dementia, involving you as one of the characters in their story, which made you smile and laugh and them too?

How can life be so cruel as to take our mind while leaving a relative good physical body?
p.s. We stood out in the cold freezing mist, yesterday, to see my wife's last uncle laid to rest. He and his wife had been in a nursing facility for months, neither knowing where they were or who they are. In their 90's and married over 70 years, did not even know each other most of the time. The last few years they lived on their own was a disaster. Lived in an old stone home my wife's grandparents had lived in. The kids had central air and heat installed. Even then, their minds were slipping. If it got too warm in the home, wife's aunt would just hit the "off" button on the thermostat. Then, when it got cold, would call one of their kids because "the furnace ain't workin'". Finally had to install a lock box over the thermostat. One day wife's uncle called his daughter. "The toilet is broken! Can you come look at it?" We she arrived, the toilet seat was gone! He, evidently, had removed the toilet seat and carried it out in one of the neighboring pastures. No one has ever found it.
Seeing them and hearing the tales the granddaughters who work in a local nursing home tell, I am a staunch supporter of euthanasia! When my mind gets to where I am just a physical being with no knowledge of my wife, family, etc., stick the needle in my arm!!!!

Wouldn't it be better if we could write a living well to say when whatever happens please put me to sleep permanently in a humane way?
In Australia we do not have this. I am sick to death of do gooders who want to control my life.

joybelle, would you believe both my wife and I have 'Living Wills', medical power of attorney forms, and our standard wills all in our safety deposit box at the bank?

We can make a living will 2old , but it is next to useless in Australia. We do have both medical power of attorney and financial. These are solid. So it seems that the USA have a better system than we do in Australia to enable a dignified death if one wishes to make out a living will?

How would you define "dignified death" as some of us would prefer euthanasia in certain circumstances... and that is not allowed??

Why is Australia so far behind with euthanasia really concerns me? There is very limited euthanasia 2old. You have to be in the last throws of death to be given euthanasia. A dignified death to me is where people do not have to suffer terrible pain.

Don't you understand we mere people have less say all the time in how our governments work?

Do you think it is time to talk about something less depressing and more light hearted?

Do you make new year resolutions?

Now why would I make New Year's resolutions if there was a possibility I couldn't keep them?
