My wife and I are doing the grand circle around the country starting around Labor Day 2019. We have a pick up and a travel trailer. We will be doing as much free camping,(Wal Mart, big box stores, Corp of engineer and BLM land.) as practical.
I am thinking we should have protection against the unthinkable, in the form of a firearm. Due to the hodgepodge of gun laws we will be subject to, a shotgun seems to be the easiest solution. The missus does not think it is necessary, while I am of the opinion that to have and not use is infinitely better than not have and be sorry.
I will be needing to buy one as all my shotguns are sporting guns with long barrels. I am think of an 18" Mossberg. Mossberg because I am left handed and they have a neutral safety on the center of the receiver.
What do you think of a .20 gauge over a .12? I am aware that on all the gun sites the hairy chested muricin he men say a .12. I lean toward a .20 due to the reduced kick so that Mary can handle it easier. I also think that getting shot with either will pretty much stop 95% of badguys in their tracks.
Please spare me the warnings and repercussions lecture. I am an experienced firearm user, and when it comes down to you or me, it is going to be you!
Opinions please?

I think it is a shame that we have to be worried about being killed while on vacation. The fear, before going on a long road trip, used to be automobile breakdown or highway accident. Now we have to be concerned about being killed while just enjoying a vacation. Since I am not a gun owner and am afraid of guns, I would never think of carrying one. But you have different life experiences than me and practice with rifles. So, yes, if I were you, I would take a gun with me for peace of mind. Obviously, I can't give you an opinion about which type of gun to take.

Either one would be a good choice. With the right load, no aiming required,,, just the general area will be a kill shot. Try that with a handgun,, even a 44 has to be pretty much dead on to be effective.

You've already decided, you just want validation. So I'll give it to you. Go with the 20 gauge.
This is my travel gun: I keep it loaded with Speer Gold Dot 38 Special Short Barrel Ammo 135 Grain +P Jacketed Hollow Points. But truthfully round nose lead reloads would probably work just about as well. I'm not trying to recommend anything to you. I'm just posting it to show off.

The way I see it. the overwhelming majority of thugs are looking for easy targets and the display of any kind of firearm on your part will place you out of that category.

To be honest I personally would not stay in parking lots.

America, land of the free home of the armed. I'm finally feeling the "Great again!" Aren't you? I can't even imagine what kind of place this country will be in 10 or 20 years if this is how we define "great." My heart aches and worries for the next generation that might have to live like this if sanity and decency is never restored. I want my country back.

My carrying a shotgun has nothing to do with the current state of our nation. At no time in our nations history would I have gone off un - armed. Firearms a part and parcel of my life. We are a rural family and always have been. As far as I know there has never been a member of my family since 1641 when my 14th? great grandfather was fined three shillings for not having a musket for drill as required by the Crown that did not have some kind of weapon in the home. Our plan is to the extent possible make full use of my taxpayer funded public land. The Southwest and West where most of our time will spent has significantly higher violent crime stats than my relatively more civilized East coast home. Some of the places where I am going have no cell signal, the only LEO response would be by random patrol. I am not carrying out of a sense of fear, but from a stance of proactive vigilance with the goal being survival.
I am also taking a shovel, axe, length of rope, a tow strap, a couple of come alongs, and a winch, with the fervent desire to use none of them.

robusta, I've never handled a firearm of any kind, and am afraid of them. However, you seem like a sensible and responsible person who owns a gun for the right reasons. I think you should do whatever makes you and your wife feel secure. Older people are often targets for those who mean no good.
My only advice would be to avoid overnighting in remote areas. The advantage of places like Walmart parking lots is that they are well lit; maybe not so scenic, but probably safer than a lot of other places.
I wish you and your wife a safe and exciting adventure next year!

Anyway, I personally would take a handgun on a trip rather than a shotgun or long rifle, as pointing at short range in/around a travel trailer could be cumbersome.
Edit: I forgot that you were unsure about "legalities" in other states regarding handguns. I believe most states don't allow concealed carry of a handgun, possibly with the exception for the person has a concealed carry permit from their home state. Some states like Texas allow open carry of a handgun, again however for those possessing a CCW.
Having a handgun in your trailer would be the same as having it in your home, most states(even California) allow that, without a permit.

NY does not offer reciprocity for other states permits. In exchange tit for tat, many states will not honor a NY permit. Long Guns are 50 state legal.

You did not mention wanting to conceal carry, but merely to possess inside your travel trailer for security. You probably needed at least the possess on premises permit, I don't know of other states that have that requirement. Here is a handy summary of the state's gun laws, for those traveling: gun-travel-transporting-handgun-united-statesLooks like all the [politically]RED states are quite gun friendly. I think Texas doesn't mind if you even have an open beer in your vehicle, as long as it's a pickup truck with a "MAGA" bumper sticker. Except on Sundays.

Good evening to all- Robusta, you may think this is a strange response coming from me seeing as how I oppose handguns and auto fire weapons. But I can see how someone might need protection on a Wal-Mart parking lot. Think about a pump action shotgun. The sound of a shell being loaded into firing position is understood in all languages, and the sound of the shell being put into position might just be enough to discourage any bad guy from messing with you. Of course, I have never needed to use a firearm for protection, and I hope you never do either. good night to all- Ed
