It's why I ordered a new copy of "1984" today. I still have the original. I should get a new copy. Scary how many times a day I'll say, "That's right out of 1984!" I'm not sure where my old copy went. Either one of my kids has it, or I accidentally donated it when cleaning out books years ago.

The thing sitting in the WH and those that worship him are fond of saying he's just being honest. Oh, so that's what we call lying these days? Honesty? It really is a mad, mad, mad, mad, mad world. I can't keep up. lol. Same here. It's why I ordered a new copy of "1984" today. 1984 deserves a re-read, considering the times we're in.
...can get a free Kindle download....only $9.99/mo. Wait, where is the "free" part, exactly?

Tell me TheSource .. how would you respond "Tactfully" when the woman asks you if her baby isn't beautiful? To me, ALL babies are beautiful. Sweet, innocent, pure, and absent of hate, malice, prejudice and every other learned human behavior. Why would anyone hold the way a person looks against them? Babies do not ask to be born. A baby cannot choose the way it will look no more than it can choose who its' parents will be. I am a pro-lifer and believe that all life is beautiful (human or otherwise). Beauty is but only skin deep. The eyes are the true window to the soul and therein lies the true beauty of the person.
In answer to your query quoted above, I would agree and say yes.

Yes. A person should always be truthful. But in certain situations, I agree that there are 'tactful' ways of telling the truth.
Fibs are lies in disguise.
How do YOU define "brutal honesty"? Is there really such a thing or is the phrase just a metaphor? You're either 'honest' or you're not. Of course you can understand that brutal honest is just blurting out the hurtful truth without tact.. right? and tact is great.. and much better than brutal honest.. but even with tact.. the recipient KNOWS that tact is being used.. I STILL and I continue to believe that there are times that you tell a person what you know they want to hear and leave them alone.. As in the example of the woman with the ugly baby.. Tell me TheSource .. how would you respond "Tactfully" when the woman asks you if her baby isn't beautiful? Love to hear that "tactful" response. lol! Sometime a person's feelings are much more important than your need to tell the truth.. don't you agree? I would have no problem telling that mother yes.. Her baby is absolutely beautiful.. and watching that mother beam.. If you don't mind me chiming in- one example of how I was introduced to tact/tactfulness as a kid: in nearly any situation, it's possible to make a statement or answer a question without injuring someone (their feelings).
The baby: "He has such gorgeous eyes!" In almost any situation, a person can find at least one 'redeeming quality' to praise. The question about the dress: "The one you wore yesterday looked so much nicer on you."
Locally, though, individuals don't believe in tact- they only consider something 'honest' if it involves flat-out arrogance.

I'm a late bloomer on e-reading, I re-purposed my 5 year old iPad Mini to be mainly an e-book device. Downloaded the Kindle app, and am still reading the first
I like print books, the big print editions.

The question about the dress: "The one you wore yesterday looked so much nicer on you." Two of my Mom's favorite sayings were, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." And, "It's no sweat off your back to compliment someone." Hey, maybe we should have a thread about things our Elders taught us.

I actually think his other work "Animal Farm" shines more light on the softening up process that precedes the slide into totalitarianism. The slogans that subtly shift over time (from the greedy pigs) and the unthinking masses (the sheep) who take then up and the thinkers (the horses) who become sidelined before being eliminated.

I'm familiar with the first one. :)
Also, though, this is something I've thought of occasionally, not just slogans but many things- previous generations (including some still around) never felt the need to write everything down, because much was simply common sense. Of course, the www, self-publishing, etc., didn't exist, but I don't think many people would've considered it necessary anyway. More like 'Doesn't everybody already know all of this?' But unfortunately too much has gotten lost along the way because stuff wasn't written down.
Unlike these days, of course, when anybody who can operate a keyboard can 'write a book,' or when people go 'Of course this or that is true- it says so on some website I read.'
(My sleep schedule is even more messed up than usual, so if anyone can understand what I just said, you get a cookie!)

I don't know about that truth thing. Here's a few examples. Do these slacks make me look fat? Isn't my baby beautiful? Isn't my new boyfriend handsome? Did you enjoy my homemade leek soup? Do you like my new haircut?
