Life always involves suffering; the cause of suffering is craving and fundamental ignorance.
We suffer because of our mistaken belief that we are only ourselves, a separate “I” whom all things in life revolve around…. craving pleasure, material goods, and the feeling we are invincible all which are desires that can never be satisfied…..
Suffering can end because thinking can be purified with awakened mind.. By living ethically, practicing meditation, and developing wisdom, we too can live as Buddha did …. We can certainly wake up… This is why I believe and understand The Four Noble Truths
Torture of another, for ANY reason… is not ethical nor is it ultimately useful…. To inflict pain on someone deliberately is sadistic and barbarian in nature. Buddhism has core value and belief that all life is sacred and that no one should do harm to another sentient being…ever….. My religion does no accept torture as moral, as our values and beliefs predicate yielding to force rather than hurt another living being. There is simply no basis for torture under any circumstances for Ch’an Buddhist like myself and I can no accept the view that torture is used to help save others or to prevent more atrocities. Jailing someone to punish is one thing… Tearing out fingernails or waterboarding or electrical discharge on genitalia, all of which may I add were the "mild" techniques used by the USA's most favored trading partner, The People’s Republic of China daily to it's own citizens and ironically once a predominately Buddhist nation….
no, you can no convince me under any circumstances that torture is useful or needed.
