Such a special day!! Commemorates the birth of the freedoms we enjoy today. Thousands have given their blood and their lives to protect those freedoms. My dad only went to 6th grade. Farm kid. Drafted in WWII. Shipped to Austria. Said many on the ship over, died before they got there. The vehicles of that time could not pull artillery cannons up the mountains. He worked with the mule teams that could... and did... pull armament and supplies up the mountains.
My wife had an uncle killed in Germany 8 days before the Germans surrendered.
An uncle of mine was killed in the Korean conflict, leaving my aunt and two small children.
Our son is still active U.S. Army, a couple years from retirement. He has seen a number of deployments with both the 82nd Airborne and the 5th Special Forces Group.
Yet, today, the democracy so many have fought to protect is teetering on the edge. Never before have the powers in Washington had in place the people installed to turn our democracy into a christo-fascist theocracy. The future of our Country as we have come to know it... have assumed will always be a democracy enjoyed by our children and grandchildren... will be decided in the next few months. People do not understand how the 2022 midterm elections and the upcoming South Carolina decision by the SCOTUS will determine whether democracy holds or becomes just another story in history books.
I have a beautiful red, white, and blue golf bag I drag out for Memorial Day, the 4th, and Veterans Day. I have U.S. flag head covers that show up those days. Today... I wore all black to the golf course. I did not take my "flag bag" and headcovers with. In the past few weeks, we've seen rights of privacy and health ripped from over half our population. Ripped from the future of our granddaughters. We have seen school children slaughtered in classrooms. This morning a mass murderer attacked a 4th of July parade. We are witnessing a SCOTUS making decisions based on THEIR religious beliefs. We're living in a world that is strange to this 75 year old.
It is difficult to be optimistic. It is difficult to not walk into a deep depressive state of mind. It is difficult to digest what we are doing to future generations. As I hear the fireworks booming across town the past couple days, I can only hope the success of democracy we have benefitted so much from in our lifetime will survive.
