Counting calories is torture.
The first few days your weight drops like a rock because you lose a couple of lbs of water weight and you think everything is cool. Then things slow down because you actually have to lose real body tissue. And as soon as your body detects that it goes into emergency conservation mode and recalibrates all systems to run at maximum efficiency in order to survive on as few calories as possible. So even though you are eating way fewer calories and feeling hungry all the time, your weight loss rate grinds down to a virtual halt. It sucks. Counting calories always worked for me. But you can't be low cal every single day for a long time as your metabolism slows down. So once a week you should do a higher calorie day. I was staying between 1100 and 1300 before we left for Thailand. One day a week was higher cal, maybe 1800. I lost 2 to 3 pounds a week. Didn't really get hungry.

I was never more than 10 lbs overweight until I hit my late 30's.
My 40th birthday I started my first diet ever. I bought workout videos (yea, it was 1992) worked out 6 days a week after work. Went on a 1200 calorie a day diet. Found myself getting dizzy a lot so increased it to 1500/day. I went from about 155 lbs to 120.
Age 59 I was 167 lbs (highest ever) and wanted to lose by my 60th birthday. Worked out at the gym like I always do. Counted calories and got to 129 lbs 2 months before my 60th.
July 1st this year - had gotten up to 164. Counted calories and watched carbs and of course worked out faithfully as always. Was 142 when we arrived. I've been 138 and 139 back and forth. Can't count calories since meals are out. Workout. About 136 or 137 would be ideal for me right now with my muscle mass.
Maintenance is my problem and I've decided I've had enough of that.

Great success story/with pics. What you got on the stringer? I was starting to get a bit pudgy around 10 or 11, and feeling a bit self conscious about it. But by the time I hit 14 I was 6ft 1 in. and 160 lb beanpole. On the stringer? What do you mean. If you mean what motivated me it was that I got tired of being called the "Fat Kid".

Grouper were easy to catch back in the day. Not so much now. They are a slow maturing fish and they have been overfished big time like so many of our marine resources. This is my old man with one. This one looks like a red grouper which is a close relative.
My old man never had a weight problem. He was 6-2 and consistently went about 175lbs. But he wasn't healthy. He died of a heart attack at 45. Which goes to show ya that Cigarettes and Booze can kill ya even if you're not fat.

This is me in 2010 looking rather portly at my all time high of 230 lbs. And a year later at a slightly reduced 215. I've stayed pretty close to that for the past 6 years by cutting back on the chow whenever I start to creep up. But I really should bite the bullet and lose some more.

My biggest trigger to overeat or crave sweets or carbs is if I am feeling frustrated or overwhelmed or discouraged. I try very hard not to get to feeling that way, and if I do, I stay out of the kitchen. I also do not keep sweets in the house because if they are there I will eat them. One thing that has helped me keep weight off all my life if that I cannot eat fried foods or fatty foods because of the horrible diarrhea they cause me to have -- ever since I was a kid this had been true for me. Knowing fats make me VERY miserable is a powerful motivation to keep away from them.
I hate having to closely watch what I eat, but since I've retired, weight creeps on a heck of a lot more easily than when I was younger. The fact that arthritis limits somewhat what exercise I can do doesn't help either.

The fact that arthritis limits somewhat what exercise I can do doesn't help either. It gets tougher to lose as we age. I'm like you - I don't keep stuff in the house because I know I'll eat it. And I'll eat all of it! When I'm on a diet and eating healthy only I am guaranteed to get diarrhea if I eat a greasy meal. What about swimming for exercise?

My trigger to overeat is alcohol. If I have two glasses of wine, or a mixed drink.. I am driven to eat.. and to eat anything I can get my hands on. I don't even feel hungry, but the impulse to eat simply overtakes me. SO.... I try to stay away from the booze completely.. and if I do have a drink, I just take it for granted that it will be a setback for my diet.

When we eat at our friends' house the hostess and I drink lots of wine. After dinner if the cheese tray and crackers come out....oink oink.

...lately I've been(my stomach's been) having feelings of hunger around 9pm. I'm sure that's the work of the Devil! funky1@# Killing any progress toward weight loss that I might have achieved for the day.

Yes, it IS the work of the devil! But you can win. Sometimes I get hungry around that time. But I have a cup of tea or something calorie free and I keep in mind that if I don't give in I'll be proud of myself in the morning and the scale and waist of my trousers will notice a difference.

Well, I am having a small bowl of high fiber bran + oat cereal with 2% milk. it's better than going to bed hungry, which I don't do too well. I found an article googling "late snacks"... 11 Nutritionist-Approved Late Night SnacksI did an extra hour of aerobic plus an additional 20 minutes of walking today, so that should help me "pay" for this snack!
