What is Alexa?
We just got the big one last week - hubby's idea. Love it!
We've got a couple of the special lightbulbs that Alexa can control. We tell 'her' to turn the light on - to make it 100% or 50% or lower. We tell 'her' to play a certain artist and she'll do a shuffle of all their music, or we can ask for a certain song. We tell her volume 1 to 10. We can ask her to tell us a joke, or look something up on Google. Fun to play with. Hubby asked her for a kiss and she said 'I like you, as a friend'.
In the morning we tell her to turn on the bedside light, living room desk light, and turn on BBC Radio 4. She can also sing you a lullaby to sleep.
Hubby took her with him to visit grandson over the weekend. He was thinking about getting them one for xmas, but after the 5 year old's behaviour with it they said 'no thanks'.

No thanks. I can do by myself. Don't see the need for one.

I'm finding it really good for music as when a song or artist comes into my head I can just tell it to play without having to stop and find the music somewhere. Really good sound system.

I have a FB friend who asks Alexa for the morning traffic report on her route, the weather and the news, all while she is getting ready for work.

No thanks. I can do by myself. Don't see the need for one. I can do it myself as well, but not as easily. I had no idea what it was when it arrived in the post as hubby had ordered it and didn't mention it to me. Now I love it!

We have the small one, the Echo Dot. It works the same way except that the Echo Dot does not have a built-in speaker system. It connects to your stereo or even the television speakers, or just about any other kind of sound system. Other than the lack of a speaker, I think that the function is about the same. I have the Alexa remote on my iphone also, and you can use that instead of speaking if you want to. Since we have Pandora, that is what I usually choose, and I can just say “Alexa, play my pandora “ and name a playlist if I want or just leave it up to her and then she plays whatever station I was playing last. I like that you can ask her to play songs by a certain artist, or even a special style of music. My friend uses Alexa to read books to her at night, and she really likes that option.
There was a story on the radio about some people who let Alexa “entertain” their daughter, and she asked Alexa for cookies and a dollhouse. Since you can order from Amazon using Alexa, several cases of cookies, and a huge dollhouse soon showed up at the front door, to the surprise of the parents. That was not the end of the story either. When they told it on the radio and quoted the words, then people who had their Echo turned on had to cancel orders of cookies and dollhouses. So, it is important to be careful what you ask Alexa to do !
