I went to visit a new patient today in a skilled nursing facility. The patient is in liver failure and only a few years older than myself. I'm told that the patient was an alcoholic, which led to this current condition. I played some soothing classical pieces and did most of the talking, but I got the impression that the visit was appreciated, even though the patient dozed on and off the entire time. I've committed to two visits per week. Given what I observed today, I would not be surprised if this is a very short term assignment.

that is so nice of you to spend time there.... so many people will benefit... I am sure Ziyi will say something about mindful compassion.... I'll just say.... it is so decent of you to share a little of your time with people who need comfort...

My first patient passed away after about 5 weeks of my visiting and I've been without someone for a few months now. I'd thought about trying to do something to work with the VA in one of the hospitals, but the nearest facilities are a bit of a hike by car. My wife is volunteering in hospice as well and has been seeing her patient for 12 weeks now. I know she's going to be very sad when he passes on, but she's taking some comfort knowing that he and his wife both enjoy her visits very much. It's a bit strange at first, knowing that the person your visiting has a short time to live. I hope I can bring some comfort. I'll be putting together a playlist of music that might be enjoyable for the patient. Spotify makes it so easy to create them. He told me he likes piano and violin. If you have any recommendations, feel free to send them along.

Bob, might I suggest Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons'? It has gorgeous, uplifting violin music. It's divided into 4 sections, one for each season, with each section suiting the mood for its particular season. A sample:

Last evening I went into Spotify and created a playlist. I'm up to 48 pieces and over 4 hours of music. Beautiful works and very soothing. I can call these up on any device, and can even save locally ini case I don't have a connection to the internet.

Good for you Bob. My career, as a CNA, was in Rest Homes, Rehabilitation Centers, and Covalescent Hospitals. And it was nice to see volunteers coming in to visit patients. Most often, then not, those were the only visitors they ever had.
