Thanks Formerlyme. That is most interesting. I did hear news reports a while ago but the simulation coupled with the signal that the astronomers licked up is new information.

I must go out and look. I haven't been much of an observer for donkeys ages. Used to get very excited many years ago when I would leave a ballroom late at night (actually early in the morning) and look up to see Mars beaming overhead. Must have another go for old times sake.
Trouble is that Sydney is so light polluted now that only the very brightest constellations are visible.

Warrigal, I live in a city, so we have lots of light pollution too. The sky here is totally overcast, so my chances of seeing anything tonight is exactly zero. I hope you get to see Mars in all its brightness!

There is a place in NSW called The Warrungles National Park that is close to Siding Springs optical observatory. We camped there when the kids were young and the night sky was just glorious. So many stars of our galaxy were on view that is was hard to recognise the constellations when I was so used to seeing just the brightest stars. I was able to see the Magellanic clouds quite clearly and Hubby wondered why I was so excited.
The night sky from the Southern Hemisphere is amazing. If I never see it like that in my lifetime I will still remember the experience.
